Chapter TEN

Christmas Rush

Previously in Chapter NINE

Without breaking the kiss, he moved their bodies and pushed the door behind. When he heard a little moan from Maya, he swiftly carried her and sat on the couch, laying her on his lap. Maya felt her heart beating faster with blood rushing everywhere in her body. She felt herself getting wet down there as Richard’s tongue played with hers while she felt his right thumb playing circles just below her left breast.

Maya put her hand on Richard’s nape and toyed with his hair, arousing him more. So, he shifted his face and started kissing Maya on her neck, up to her earlobe, then down to her neckline. Again, a moan of pleasure escaped her mouth. When Richard covered her firm nipple with his mouth and sucked on it gently, Maya arched her body and tightened her grip on his hair.

          “Sir Richard?!”

Richard woke up at the sound of Sabel calling his name. Yes, it was just a dream alright, and he felt very very relieved. He was glad that it was his house help Sabel who called his name and not Doris, just like how he dreamed of. Realizing that he was lying on the lounge chaise chair in his boxer shorts, he sat up right away to hide the bulging muscle in between his legs.

“Sabel, bakit ba ang ingay mo?!” Richard asked in a casual and grouchy manner, as if everything’s normal.

“Ay Sir, pasensha na po! Natakot naman po kasi ako. Kala ko po may nakapasok ng lalaki dito sa bahay, eh kayo lang pala yan. Dito po kayo natulog sa may pool Sir? Hindi po ba kayo pinapak ng lamok?”

Richard answered with a question. “Anong oras na ba?”

“Mga 8:30 na po. Kaya pala hindi po kayo sumasagot kahit anong katok namin sa pinto nyo kanina eh. Nandito po pala kayo.”

He wanted to stand and go to his room but he could still feel his Mr. Winky very much alive and bulging. So, he decided to do something else first. “Sabel, paabot na lang muna ng towel please.”

“Sige po Sir.” Sabel went to the cabinet a few feet away and reached for a towel while Richard removed his shirt.

After handing it to Richard, Sabel stared and waited for further instructions. Bothered by her presence, Richard made another request and waited for Sabel to leave. “Coffee please.”

“S-sir, pati po ba almusal nyo, dalhin ko na lang po d-dito sa patio?” Sabel squeezed her hands together and stumbled on her words seeing her boss without an upper garment. “B-baka g-gusto po ninyo Sir, dun na lang po kayo mag almusal sa cabana pool bar?!” Sabel excitedly suggested serving food from that area of the house that has not been used since they transferred.

“Okay, I think that’s a good idea! Paki sabi na rin kay Lea dalhin dito si Abby kung gising na.”

          “Right away, Sir!”

Soon after Sabel turned her back, Richard rushed towards the pool and jumped in. While doing some laps, Richard’s mind was everywhere. He was thinking of Maya and their new friendship, and wondered if it would and could ever lead to something else. With Maya still being legally married, he wondered if she would even allow anything beyond that friendship. What he knows though, is that she is special to him and he is much happy and contented when she’s around. He’s thankful that their daughters get along so well too.

Moments later, Sabel returned pushing a food cart, walking along side Manang Fe with Abby and Lea trailing behind. Richard on the other hand was swimming towards the cabana area, pondering whether going on a trip together would be an acceptable idea to Maya and Angelo. His thoughts were interrupted when Abby called his name.

“Daddy! Daddy!” Wearing her Hello Kitty swimwear, Abby shouted at the top of her lungs, so eager to join her father.

Richard looked up and proceeded to the side of the pool. “Abby!”

“Ricardo!

Manang Fe said as a matter of fact, leaving Richard with no other choice. But seeing the sad face of Abby, Richard bargained.

“Manang Fe is right Abby. But don’t be sad, dun ka na lang sa Jacuzzi area maglaro, tutal shaded area naman and we’ll heat up the water too. Pero mag breakfast muna tayo, okay?”

          “Okay po Daddy!”

“Tawagan mo agad ang Mama mo. Dalawang beses tumawag kanina, akala namin tulog ka pa dahil katok kami ng katok. Hindi ka raw sumasagot sa cellphone mo kaya sa landline na tumawag.”

“Bakit daw po Manang? May ibinilin ba?  Is there a problem? May sakit ba isa sa kanila?”

“Wala naman sinabi, basta tawagan mo raw agad siya. Tinanong lang kung kailan ba daw ang bakasyon ng bata.”

“Okay po, I will call her pag akyat ko mamaya sa kwarto.”

Later, Richard watched his daughter play in the Jacuzzi while he sat comfortably, enjoying the heated water massaging his back. “Are you having fun Abby?”

“Yes Daddy! But I think it would be more fun if I have a playmate here with me…like Sunshine!”

“I think so too. Why don’t you invite her to come here so you can play?” Richard suggested the idea to his daughter right away.

         “Really Daddy?”

“Yes! Why not? Anyway, there’s just few more days left and it’s already your Christmas vacation. You can spend time together then.” Richard went back thinking of spending a vacation together somewhere like Hello Kitty Land in Malaysia, or Disneyland in Hongkong. He got excited at the thought of spending time with Maya. He wondered then what time she went home last night and what she could be doing right that moment.

“Ricardo! Kausapin ka na ng Mama mo. Hindi na nakaantay sa tawag mo.” Manang Fe handed over to Richard the cordless phone.

“Hi Ma! Sorry for not calling back agad. Abby and I are spending time together here in the Jacuzzi.”

“Ricky, that sounds fun! Can’t wait to see you both soon!”

“So, are you coming home for Christmas? You’ll love the house.”

“I’m sure I will but no son. We’re not coming home. We’re spending Christmas in Hongkong with you and Abby!”

           “W-what? W-when? How?”

“I couldn’t wait for your call so I took the liberty and booked you and Abby for the 18th!”

“Ma, I would love to spend Christmas with you pero I can’t leave on the 18th! I’ll just have it re-booked to some other date, maybe on the 23rd instead. I have an important hearing on the 19th.”

“Well I’m sorry Ricky, fully booked na, you know naman peak season. Buti naka singit pa ako ng 2 persons sa 18th. Besides, naayos na rin ang accommodations natin. Yung hearing mo ang i-pareschedule mo. May pasok pa ba ng December 19?”

“Of course Ma, it’s a Monday and malayo pa ang holiday dito, it’s still on the 23rd.”

“Gawan mo ng paraan. I will text you your flight details.

Richard felt frustrated that he practically lost control over his schedule for the next days to come because of his mother’s surprise. “Abby, we’ll spend Christmas with Lolo and Lola in Hongkong. We’ll visit Disneyland!”

          “Wow! I’m excited Daddy!”

“Me too. But now, Daddy has to make an important call. You can still play, but don’t stay too long ha.”

          “Okay po daddy.”

“Lea, ikaw na muna bahala kay Abby, bantayan mo ng maigi.

           “Opo, Sir.”

Richard immediately went to his room and searched for his phone. He looked over the window while he called some people to make some arrangements. He noticed that Maya’s car is not parked in her garage. He looked at the time and made some more calls. As his efforts to ask assistance from his colleagues at the firm turned futile, he decided to call Angelo.

“Stag! I was about to call you. So how did it go with Maya?” Angelo asked about it right away.

“It went okay. Nagulat na magkapit bahay lang kami. Her house is actually about a minute from mine.”

“That’s good to hear. Madali kong mapapatignan sa iyo si Maya. Anyway, ano ang kailangan mo?”

“Oh yeah, that. Well I was hoping you could help me ka – ”

“Stag, kung manliligaw ka na, gawin mo mag-isa. You have my blessings, and I’m sure Ate won’t mind at all.”

Although that was not his concern at the moment, he felt relieved with the statement of Angelo. “Brod, hindi yun ang itinawag ko. As I was saying, I was hoping you could help me kasi si Mama, bigla nag-decide mag Christmas sa Hongkong and booked our flight for the 18th.  Baka pwede mo naman isingit sa schedule mo sa 19 yung personal case ko. No one could help me sa firm.”

“Meron pa ba maghe-hearing ng 19? Anung kaso? Saang Court yan?”

“Sa Pasig Brod. Rape. Nakakulong yung akusado eh. Pamangkin ni Mang Lem, napag-initan ng among babae. Kasi, he saw her with someone else in the act while the husband was in Singapore for business. Nabuntis kaya sa kanya sinisi, he was set up to cover the truth.”

          “Anung oras yan?”

“Umaga Brod. 8:30. It is the last opportunity for them to present evidence. Hindi kasi nagpapakita yung mga amo na nagreklamo.  Sayang baka pag hindi represented yung akusado ma re-set uli. Pwede naman ng ma pa-dismiss, mapapalaya na yung tao, pamilyado Brod eh. Magpapasko.”

“Na-ngonsensha ka pa. Okay, I will squeeze it in my schedule. Mabuti na lang sa Shangrila Mall lang ang meeting namin with the wedding coordinator.”

“Thank you! I owe you one.”

“Big time! At marami-rami na yun ha. O magkwento ka na. So, hinatid mo lang si Maya?”

“Hmm, nagkwentuhan over coffee. Magaan siyang kausap. Uhm…I told her what happened.”

           “You mean, the accident?”

             “Yes.”

“Well, that’s a step. What was her reaction?”

             “Umiyak, sakit daw sa dibdib.”

“Hindi mo pa nga nililigawan, pinaiyak mo na pamangkin ko?”

“She’s so nice, I wouldn’t want to see her cry again.”

“Hahaha! You sound so serious! Iba na yan Brod! So, what else did she say?”

Annoyed, Richard refused to say more.Wala na.

Angelo knew he vexed his friend with his teasing. “Okay! Kay Maya na lang ako magpapakwento. Tamang-tama, she’s here now.”

             “Sh-she’s with you?”

“Yup, kararating lang, it’s our monthly family lunch. Sige na, just text me the details of the hearing.”

The following days went crazy for both Richard and Maya. While most trial courts do not conduct proceedings during the second half of December, cases with detention prisoners are squeezed in the tight schedule of the courts with the view of the possibility of their release from jail in time for Christmas. Both attended hearings here and there, and rushed pleadings to beat deadlines. Richard however, never missed checking if Maya’s car is where it is usually parked, satisfied with the knowledge that she’s safe home every night.

It was finally Friday and Richard was looking forward going home, with the hope that he could invite himself again for coffee at Maya’s place like the other week. He knows Maya would be home than out with friends and toyed with the idea of keeping her company. Not that he wanted to make his dream real, but really just to catch up after a week’s work. Unfortunately, it was also a Friday night out with the boys and he couldn’t find a way to excuse himself.

It was past 3:00 o’clock in the morning when Richard entered the subdivision premises. He slowed down at the approach of the end of the road. He looked to his left to see again if Maya’s car is already parked. He frowned upon seeing none and flexed his neck to look further. He felt relieved to see it inside the garage this time, and not along the road where teh car usually is. As he was about to turn right towards his house, he saw Maya coming out of her balcony drinking a glass of water while looking at her mobile phone. He smiled and immediately pulled out his phone and pressed some keys.

The sudden sound released by her mobile phone surprised Maya, and was even more surprised to see the name of Richard flashing on her phone screen.

        “Richard?”

“Yes, Maya, it’s me. Why are you still up at this time?”

“Huh? Sigurado ka talaga na gising ako? Tumawag ka kaya.”

         “Yes!”

         “Really?”

“Yes! I’m very sure because you were drinking water while looking at your phone just before I called.”

“You can see me here from your house?”  Maya asked incredulously.

“I can actually see you from the house but now, I can clearly see you from here at the corner of the street.” Richard flashed his head lights to make the signal.

“Oh I see. So, why are you still out on the road at this hour? Is that your usual time ng pag-uwi?”

“I was out with the boys –“

          “Kasama mo si Tito Angelo?”

“No, kami lang from the firm. What about you? What are you doing out in the balcony at this hour? Is that your room? Kaka uwi mo rin lang ba?”

“Yes, it’s my room. Actually, kakagising ko lang. Nakatulugan ko yung pleading na ginagawa ko kanina. Hindi talaga dapat dinadala sa bedroom ang work, nagiging unan lang. Sa pagod na rin siguro kaya nakatulog ako. It was a hectic week for me.”

“Same here. It was a very busy week for me too. Halos wala ng pahinga, pati laptop ko halos 24/7.”

“Yun naman pala Atty. Lim, eh bakit dumadaldal ka pa sa kalye? Go home na, baka hinahanap ka na ni Manang Fe.”

“Okay, you’re right. I’ll be on my way home now. But, uhm…can you keep me company? Kausapin mo ako, baka makatulog ako sa daan eh.”

“Hahaha! Atty. Lim, nakakatawa. Sige na, hangang sa makarating ka sa bahay mo, ang laaayo pa naman.”

“Thank you! So why are you out in the balcony? Hindi ba mahamog na?”

“Yeah, lamig na ng simoy ng hangin.  Amoy pasko na talaga.”

“Sounds weird but I agree. There is something peculiar at this time of the year…you can feel and smell Christmas in the air.”

“Lalo na dito sa bahay, because of the goodies I bake.”

“Baka pwede naman maki-amoy ng Christmas air mo jan so I can understand what you’re saying.”

“Hahaha, sure. Chirstmas brings a lot of childhood memories.”

“Yeah, kahit only child ako, marami rin akong childhood memories ng pasko.”

“Yes, kaya I make sure I bake some particular goodies only during Christmas, so it will also bring lots of childhood memories to my daughter.”

“Aray, naawa naman ako sa anak ko. She does not have much memory to identify Chrismas with. I told you, mas maswerte ang anak mo kesa kay Abby because she has a mother like you.”

“Then make memories with her during this season.  If you can’t bake, you can make other memories in so many other ways. Like… make hot cocoa milk with her in the middle of the night and read to her Christmas strories near the Christmas tree.”

            “That’s a very nice i–”

“Ricardo!  Ano ba’t nasa telepono ka pa ganitong oras ng madaling araw?!  Inumaga ka na, ni-lock mo ba ang gate?”

“Hahaha. Atty. Lim, madaya ka. Nasa bahay ka na pala. Sige na, baka mapalo ka pa ni Manang Fe. Ang ingay mo siguro, ayan nagising.”

“Okay Maya, thank you. It was nice talking to you. Good night Maya.”

            “Good night Richard.”

Richard woke up and saw Abby’s frustrated face. “Hi Abby!”

Daddy! Ang tagal mo naman gumising. I was waiting for you but I was really hungry already so I ate again without you.”  Abby complained.

Richard looked at the time right away.  It was already almost 1:00 o’clock.  “I’m sorry baby you had to eat without me.  Sana kanina mo pa ako ginising.”

“Ang hirap nga po ninyo gisingin eh.  I wanted to talk to you kanina pa po. I have a problem.”

Upon hearing this from her daughter, Richard immediately sat up and held his child. “What is it Abby? Tell Daddy.”

Abby opened her school diary and showed Richard a page where she copied the reminders written on the board by her homeroom teacher.  “Manang Fe said you help me because she cannot understand.”

Richard read the page and stared at it for a moment.  He also could not understand it.   “I also cannot understand but don’t worry, we will ask Tita Maya, she might know this.”

“Hi Maya!” Richard said immediately upon hearing her voice from the other line.

“O Richard, don’t tell me you are calling kasi nasa kanto ka na naman.”  Maya said in jest.

“No, I’m sorry to bother you on a weekend.  It’s rest day but there’s something written on Abby’s notebook and we can’t understand what she needs to bring to school by Monday.  I thought you might be able to help me on this. Something about a gift for a boy classmate, potluck food and  and panuluyan?”

“Ah…kasi Christmas party na nila sometime next week and kids are required to turn in their exchange gifts to make sure everyone will receive something sa party. Yung potluck kasi there is a salusalo after the Mass and panuluyan show sa gabi, may pinadadala ba na food sa kanya? Like 10 sticks of barbeque?”

“Yes! I knew alam mo to. Buti na lang. Ano yung panuluyan?”

“Re-enactment nung time when Mama Mary was about to give birth, dba naghahanap sila ng matutuluyan…kaya panuluyan.  Don’t forget dapat naka wrap na rin ang exchange gift pag dinala ni Abby sa school ha.”

“She wants me to buy it with her now.  I don’t have any idea what to buy.”

“May price limit naman.  You can’t go below or above the ceiling price.  Ayaw ng school ng extravagant spending.  By the way, sa na-experience ko last year, mas maganda if you have something for her teachers as well, aside from her homeroom adviser. Kasi baka siya lang walang iaabot sa other teachers, she might feel awkward or mahiya.  Mga anik anik will do, basta may ma-i-abot siya because you see, these teachers give out gifts to the kids as well.  It’s their way also of teaching generosity and sharing on Christmas.”

“I’m overwhelmed.  I don’t even know how many teachers she has.”

“I can help you, nasa school diary lang naman ni Abby yan.  Actually Richard kararating lang namin ngayon sa mall ni Sunshine, we’re going to  do some shopping, pwede kita idamay. I just need to know ilan – “

“Great! I think the better idea is, sunod kami sa inyo ni Abby diyan sa mall.”

“Uhm…okay!  Dito lang naman kami sa mall pag labas ng subdivision gate at the otherside.  Dun ka na lang mag park sa building B, where the theaters are.  Mas malapit kasi sa bookstore and department store.”

“Okay, we’ll see you in a while.”  Richard said excitedly.

“Paki dala na lang nung school diary ni Abby ha.”

Richard watched Maya in awe again.  She looked as if she does things effortlessly.  In his mind, what a great woman Maya is.  As soon as they met at the food center, she quickly made a list of what to buy for Abby.  She does things confidently and patiently.  The mall was crowded, the lines were long, and it took them time to finish buying everything but she never complained even when the two girls were being over playful.  She even took turns checking on them and making sure their backs are not wet with sweat.

“Daddy I’m hungry!”  Abby blurted out as soon as they got out of the store. Richard did not actually have anything because he had to rush out of the house to go to the mall.

          “Me too!” Sunshine echoed.

“I’m hungry as well! Let’s eat!  Where do you want to eat dinner girls?”

When they reached the chosen restaurant, the girls immediately ran to one sofa bench at the table pointed by the waiter.

“Daddy I want to seat beside Sunshine!”

“Of course! Go ahead, sit together.”  Richard responded, leaving the other sofa bench for him and Maya. So he casually led Maya to the inner side so she’ll be facing Sunshine.

“Thank you.”  Was all Maya could say, feeling a little awkward after she became conscious that she’ll be sitting close to him.

During dinner, Maya appeared normal observing Richard casually but deep inside her, she was thinking of  what she was feeling… she felt contented and happy.  In her mind, there is something about the man sitting close next to her that makes her feel very comfortable, secured and special.  Richard on the other hand, was fighting the urge to show his feelings.  He wanted to touch her cheeks or hold her hand, but he was worried that it would scare away Maya.  He also wanted to be discreet and protect Maya, because she’s still married and the annulment is still being processed.

“Thank you for dinner Atty. Lim.” Maya said smiling.

“Thank you for letting us tag along with you and Sunshine.  Na-solve  na ang problema ko, nag enjoy pa si Abby. Thank you rin for offering to wrap the gifts.”

“Thank you rin for covering the food that the kids will bring.  Pa thank you na rin kay Manang Fe.”

The girls were giggling while they watch their parents exchange words of gratitude.

          “Daddy…”

“What is it this time Abby?”

          “Let’s watch a movie Daddy!”

“W-well…you ask Tita Maya and Sunshine if they want to watch too.”

“Ha…eh, aabot pa ba sa last full show?” Maya asked.

“I also want to watch a movie and eat popcorn.” Sunshine informed her mother.

After putting their shopping bags in their respective cars, the four rushed together to the theater and the girls waited with Maya at the snack area while Richard lined up for the tickets.  It didn’t matter to him what the girls chose to watch.  He was just pleased that the time spent with them has been extended.

Inside the movie theater, Richard let Maya and Sunshine sit first so he can stay at the end seat but Abby immediately occupied it.  “Abby move to the next seat.” Richard said.

“But Daddy I want to sit here po.” Abby insisted so Richard moved to the next.  “But Daddy we also want po to sit beside each other.  Diba Sunshine?”

“Can I sit beside Ate Abby po?” Sunshine immediately asked Maya who just looked at Richard.

“Fine, sit beside each other.  Maya, maybe it is better if dito ka na sa tabi ni Sunshine.  Ako na lang diyan.”

“Okay, sige. Pag bigyan na sila, tutal pambata naman yung movie mas enjoy nga naman if magkatabi sila.”

“Pasensha na sa kakulitan ni Abby.  She’s overwhelmed with this.  Wala kasing nakakalaro sa bahay, palagi pa akong wala.”

While the girls, including Maya, were having fun watching, Richard was falling asleep.  Maya felt Richard slowly sliding down from the seat, as if looking for a more comfortable position.  Then, unexpectedly, Richard rested his head on Maya’s right shoulder.  She did not move and instead took a deep breath and inhaled his cologne.

Maya softly tugged Richard’s arm to wake him up.  “Atty. Lim, gising na, uwian na po.”

Richard found himself leaning on Maya. “I’m sorry, I dozed off.”  he said a little embarrassed and stood up right away.  Instinctively, he held his hand out and assisted Maya.

“Napuyat kasi si Atty. Lim.” Maya teased.

“Daddy! You fell asleep!  You did not see what happened to Olaf!”

“Did I make some noise?” Richard asked.

“No Daddy but you fell asleep on Tita Maya’s shoulder!”

“Hindi ka naman nag snore, pero ang lalim ng hininga mo. Mukhang pagod ka pa.”  Maya shared her observation.

“Why, hindi ka ba napagod kanina?  We walked and stood for hours.”  Richard said softly as he walked beside her. The girls were walking ahead of them, giggling while holding hands. How he wished he could do the same with Maya.

“It seems like hindi ka pa nakabawi sa pagod mo from the week’s work at puyat mo naman from gimmick last night.  Bilisan na natin maka uwi at ng maka pahinga na tayong lahat.”

After a very tiring week, the two slept like babies with smiles on their faces.

Concerning the Concerns

Previously in Chapter SIX

“I was the cause of the delay. Color coding kasi ako and it was close to 3:00 p.m. so pinilit ko makarating sa condo ko sa Eastwood so I can change vehicles. Kaya lang, pag dating sa Ortigas extension, sobrang traffic because of road works. Then there was miscommunication sa house. Dapat nauna ang yaya sa school before dumating ang tourist bus from field trip, even assuming that I was on time.” Richard explained, conscious of Maya’s facial expression.

“So the little girl, si Abby, she is your daughter? Ikaw yung Daddy niya?” Maya asked with a high tone.

**********

Continuation…

“Yes, I am.” Richard answered in a calm voice and restrained face.

“And you bring Abby to school every day?” Maya asked.

“Yes, I do, bonding time na kasi naming mag-ama.” Richard proudly answered.

“Talaga, as in everyday?” Maya asked again.

“Yes, that’s why I don’t agree on hearing dates with early settings in the morning.” Richard went on to explain.

“Walang mintis?” Maya on the other hand was making sure.

“Yes! If may lapses man, maybe twice or thrice lang siguro.” Richard said with conviction.

“So, since ikaw yung naghahatid kay Abby, malamang ikaw rin yung hindi makapag antay sa drop off kaya busina ka ng busina?”

“Yeah, that was me, alright.” Richard admitted easily.

FLASHBACK

It was early Friday morning, Maya’s car stopped behind the tricycle parked along the tear-drop shaped drop off area of the school, from where a high school student was disembarking. No cars were around yet because it was only around 6:20 in the morning and students are usually dropped off in school beginning 6:45. Maya had to bring Sunshine to school very early that day because she had a court hearing in Mandaluyong City and being a Friday, she anticipated heavy traffic.

“We’re here!” Maya pulled the hand break then the lever to open the trunk. She went down from her car and pulled out the trolley bag of Sunshine and settled it on the floor. Sunshine has not gone out of the car so Maya opened the door and called out for her daughter.

“Sunshine, baba na diyan. Pasensha ka na, mommy has to go to work early today, kaya pati ikaw maaga tuloy ngayon.”

“It’s okay Mommy, I have classmates who come to school this early. Sometimes I catch them sleeping heads down on their table sa room…they live far from here kasi.”

Maya is thankful that they live in a very nice community and just near the school. She actually acquired the house from her baptismal godmother, a single lady who migrated abroad.

“Ganun ba? Today lang naman ‘to anak because Ate Doris can’t bring you here at a later time kasi may gumagawa na tubero sa bahay eh. Sige na, punta ka na sa room agad ha. Mag coloring book ka na lang muna or sabayan mo na lang kaya mga classmates mo mag nap. But if you want, pass by the chapel and pray first.” Maya said while securing Sunshine’s school ID around her neck. “Ang likod mo ha, pag pawis ka, palagay ka ng lampin as likod.” Maya then checked on Sunshine’s back and felt it moist. “Ayan na nga at pinagpapawisan ka na agad. Sandali lagyan muna kita ng lampin.”

Maya opened the school bag to get the cloth diaper and started fixing it on her daughter’s back. She was making sure that it won’t be seen outside the collar of the uniform, when the car behind honked several times.

PRESENT

“Bumisina ka eh no-blowing-of-horns-zone na yun.” Maya said as a matter of fact. “Are you that impatient?”

“Eh maaga pa naman nuon, and hindi pa nag start ang classes. I had a hearing that morning kaya medyo nagmamadali ako. Tapos, naka baba na si Abby but I could not leave because the car in front of me was not moving and I thought, nauna na nga nagbaba ng pasahero sa akin, hindi pa rin nakaka alis.”

“Kasi naman Atty. Lim, when Abby went down from your car, nakita kami ni Sunshine, and she went to us. Of course may kaunting usap pa kami tapos inayos ko pa yung uniform ni Abby.”

“Yes I saw that. Kaya nga, inatras ko agad yung car and left right away. Hahaha!” Richard confessed laughing.

“Ah ganun? Eh bakit ka tumatawa ngayon?”

“Eh kasi…I panicked. Hahaha! I remember I saw you glance at my direction and of course when I realized that it was your car, I got so embarrassed. Then I got worried that you might confront me, katukin mo ako sa bintana kaya napa atras ako so I could leave right away baka makita mo pa ako.” Richard narrated in detail chuckling.

“Alam mo ba, kung alam ko lang na ikaw nga yung nasa loob ng car, I would have taken the opportunity at talagang malamang nilapitan kita.”

“Seriously? You would confront me dahil lang sa binusinahan kita?” Richard asked Maya, smiling almost in a flirtatious way.

“Hindi ah. I’ve been intending to talk to Abby’s father but I was also having second thoughts. I just wanted to talk about Abby. Had I known na ikaw pala yung father, hindi siguro ako nag dalawang isip pa.”

“Why? What about Abby?” Richard asked, now in a serious tone and with a contorted face.

“Wala ba nakwento si Abby sa iyo when you fetched her from the field trip?”

“Marami, first she met Sunshine and her very nice mommy, and the rest of it, about the field trip.” Richard replied without thinking.

“Wow, very nice mommy, eh ako yun diba?” Hahaha! I remember Abby’s friend, si Bea, she called me mommy-of-Sunshine. Nakakatuwa ang mga bata ano?”

“Is there something else that I should know?” Richard asked.

Maya wiped her mouth and pushed aside her plate. “Would you like another cup of coffee?” she asked.

“Yes, please.” Richard just immediately replied, anxious of what Maya has to say about Abby. “So, what is it all about, Maya?”

Maya stood up and went to the coffee maker and started brewing. “Uhm… Richard, kasi nanay ako eh… pasensha na if I will sound or appear to be meddling with your lives, pero kasi nakaka concern lang yung nagyari kay Abby. She has this classmate who confronted her about the absence of her mother and being an ampon.”

“What?! W-what do you mean?” Richard sounded surprised, confused and worried. So Maya immediately narrated in detail what she witnessed that afternoon.

“Abby did not mention anything about it, not even Sabel.” Richard said with perplexed face, staring at his cup of coffee. It was all that he could say after Maya’s narration, feeling sad, lost, resentful and guilty.

“Wala pa si Sabel when the conversation took place.”

“Those are harsh words to say…and Abby is so young.”

“I couldn’t believe it myself. Mga salitang ganun lumalabas sa bibig ng classmate ni Abby.  But what really affected me was when Abby said kung may mommy raw siguro siya, baka nandun rin daw kagaya ko. Then she wondered, sarap daw siguro ang may mommy.”

Maya felt Richard was hurting so she continued to speak her mind out just so she could compensate Richard’s silence. “My heart went out to her, at the same time, nasaktan ako for my daughter. I realized then, that she could be feeling the same way about her father.”

Richard’s mind might have been wandering, but this didn’t stop him from hearing Maya’s voice cracking up. He looked at Maya and saw tears flowing from her doe eyes. Instantly, he moved to the chair next to Maya and tried to comfort her. “Maya, between the two of us, you are in a better situation. You’re there for your daughter. Richard said while wiping the tears from her cheeks. He handed the hanky to her and continued. “Abby’s mother had a severe postpartum depression and was having a hard time adjusting, so practically, she was never there for her.”

Maya took the hanky and wiped the tears from her eyes. For a moment he stared at Richard without saying anything. “Don’t worry, my hanky is clean. I haven’t used it today to wipe anything.” Richard assured her.

“Sira, hindi naman yun eh.” Maya comfortably hit Richard’s arm in jest. “I was about to say, that a mother carries her child for 9 months. So, at least from the time your wife conceived until she had that postpartum thing, she was there for Abby. And it’s very apparent that you’ve always been there for her. In my case, he chose to be absent in our lives even before our daughter was born.”

Richard recalled his conversation with Angelo about Maya’s past. While other important details were left untold, he was very certain that whatever it is in her past, his admiration and respect for Maya will be the same. “You are perceptively a strong woman Maya. You seemed to have taken things well. You and your daughter are okay.”

“I had to be strong for my daughter. When she was born, she became my strength and I moved on.”

“Your daughter is very lucky to have you as her mother. You are always there for her.”

“Your daughter is also very lucky to have you as her father because you love her and you’re always there for her, you make efforts at sabi mo nga walang mintis.”

“But a father can never be a mother. We do not have the same bond that mothers have with children, because as you’ve said, you carry them for 9 months. Fathers do not have the mother instinct.”

“Okay fine, I agree on that. Pero give credit to yourself. You love your daughter and you are there for her. Hindi katulad nung bangungot na yun! Alam mo naman siguro that he left while I was pregnant and was not there when I was giving birth to our child. He did not even bother to see her at all.”

Richard took the chance to ask her about something that he is concerned about. “Maya…I hope you don’t mind…but uhm…I noticed…well…if you have moved on a long time ago, w-why are you still wearing your wedding ring?”

“Because I am still legally married to him.”  Maya answered immediately without hesitation or inhibition.

Richard immediately understood what she meant and instantly, his admiration for her grew stronger. Maya went a little further. “Ayokong may masabi sa akin.”

Richard smiled and nodded in acknowledgment. “Logical reason why you became Mrs. Stag.”

Not expecting such statement from Richard, Maya gave a short explanation. “Eh kahit naman liberal na mga tao ngayon, society can still be really cruel to a woman like me. Lalo na with the annulment case…”

“I understand. Nailang ka ba kanina, kaya you’d rather take the cab alone than ride with me?”

“Iba naman yun eh. Besides, nahiya lang talaga ako kasi it was still early and the night has just started for the boys. Alam ko naman mga boys after ng party may iba pang lakad minsan, eh kakasimula pa lang ng party.”

“I see. Iba naman yun.” Richard not sure if he really understood what she meant so he wanted to hear her say it. “You mean, you don’t go on dates? Or at least you don’t want to be perceived to be on a date.”

“Hindi naman sa ganun. It’s just that if I don’t wear the ring, it’s like I’m saying to the world that I am single and available when I am not. I don’t want to be misinterpreted sa simpleng hindi pagsuot ng singsing. Ayoko naman isipin ng tao that I’m offering myself to men –”

Richard did not let her finish and instead asked. “You don’t mind being called Mrs. Stag?”

“Nakakatawa, kanina ko lang nalaman yang Mrs. Stag na yan when a bitchy batch mate of mine saw you talking to me and mom. She wanted daw to meet Mr. Stag but got too excited to ask me the favor of introducing her to you. Slip of the tongue, she called me Mrs. Stag. Feeling awkward, she had to explain it to me.”

“So how did you react to that?” Richard curiously asked.

“Ipapakilala sana kita kaya lang nawala ka eh. Crush na crush ka daw nya. Apparently, marami raw may crush sa iyo. Oooy…feeling high school. Hahaha!”

“Silly! I meant, hindi ka ba napikon that your batch mate called you Mrs. Stag?”

“She’s one of those who gossiped about my pregnancy, my civil wedding, and being abandoned. I’m not surprised now may calling of names na, wala kasing machismis na iba. I don’t mind to be talked about again and being called Mrs. Stag. It’s a good indication of how people perceive me now.”

“She’s really a bitchy batch mate. I’m glad I didn’t meet her earlier.”

“Richard, pwede ako naman magtanong? I don’t see any wedding ring anywhere but why have you become Mr. Stag, why do you go to socials alone when it seems so easy for you to have a date?”

“Hmmmm, let’s just say that back then, I have not met anyone interesting or…there was no one who was nice enough to be in company with…”

“Ahhhh…you did not find anyone interesting, baka something’s holding you back… hindi ka pa ba nakakapag move on sa kanya?” Richard looked down and Maya felt offensive. “I’m sorry if I got too personal, you don’t need to ans –

“Maybe.. Maybe something is holding me back, Maya. There was no closure. There was an unsettled issue. You see Maya, she…she died…in the arms of another man.”

Chapter SIX

The Parents

Previously in Chapter FIVE

“Maya, my house is just a minute from here.” he said with a grin.

“What? Are you serious? So, dito ka rin nakatira sa subdivision?” she was surprised to know.

“Yeah. You see that house up there? Richard pointed to the only house in the hilly part of the subdivision, just a few meters away from Maya’s street. “That’s my house.”

“So we live in the same subdivision? You live there? Ikaw yung may ari ng mansion na yan?” Maya asked with incredulous tone.

Continuation…

Richard looked at her with puckered face. “You sound like you think I’m just joking around.” He held Maya’s arm and led her back to the car. “Come, samahan mo muna ako.”

“Uy, san tayo pupunta? Wait lang hindi pa ako nakaka pasok sa bahay, yung mangga oh.” Maya said while following his pace. They were already seated back in the car before Richard answered.

Richard has just made a maneuver because the street of Maya was a dead end, and was already heading up towards his street. “Samahan mo lang muna ako ihatid yung fruits sa bahay ko, it will take just a couple of minutes.”

“So kaya ka pala kilala ng mga guards kasi dito ka nga nakatira.” Maya thought out loud.

“Exactly. Dirediretso nga lang pagpasok, sinaluduhan pa ako. The car has a sticker, look.” Richard pointed to it.

“Accurate ka ha. Talagang a minute lang nga itong house mo from my place. Bago lang kayo dito? Dati kasi luma na yung paint, tapos after na re-paint, pansin ko na may nakatira na. So, ikaw na yun?” Maya asked while looking at the massive house.

“Hmmm…actually yung house medyo matagal na pero we moved here this year lang. Pina repaint lang before we moved in. Kailangan na kasi ng mas sariwang hangin. So, ang nakatiwangwang naman, yung condo unit ko sa Quezon City.” Richard stopped the car but Maya was quick to open the door for herself and stepped out of the vehicle.

“Wow, mas malaki at maganda pala siya pag malapitan.” Maya gave her observation while Richard took the plastic bag of fruits from the back seat.

Richard unlocked the gate with his key and grabbed Maya’s hand. “Let’s go inside. Watch your step medyo malaki yung gap ng mga path stones, baka mapatid ka.”

Richard let go of Maya’s hand. She was left standing on one of the big path stones on the vast grassy area between the gate and the house, while Richard moved up further towards the main door, skipping a few stones. “Wow, such a beauty to see.” Maya said as she looked up, in awe of the well-designed house in the middle of a beautiful garden.

Richard looked back at Maya and appreciated her beauty. “Yes, such a beauty to see.”

“Anak nandito ka na pala.” The old woman just outside the well-crafted two-door entrance said.

Richard abruptly looked behind. “Good evening po Manang. Uhm, Manang Fe, si Maya po, pamangkin po ni Angelo at kapit bahay natin. She lives in that house.” Richard pointed to Maya’s house. “Maya, si Manang Fe, she’s like my second mother, siya nag alaga sa akin since pagka-bata ko.”

Maya waved at the old woman. “Good evening po Manang Fe.”

Manang Fe was in full smiles at her. “Magandang gabi Maya. Pamangkin ka ni Angelo? Madalas sa amin si Angelo eh. Nito na lang paglipat namin dito, hindi pa nagpapakita.”

“Opo, nakababata pong kapatid ng Mama ko si Tito Angelo. At busy po siya lately, ikakasal na po kasi. Tapos active pa po sa Integrated Bar of the Philippines.” Maya explained.

Manang Fe was still smiling at her. “Ah, yung IBP ba yun? Samahan ng mga abogado?”

Richard joined the conversation. “Yes Manang Fe. Maya is also a lawyer. Fierce lawyer, I must say.”

Manang Fe was impressed. “Talaga Maya? Ang galing mo naman, ang batang abogada! Halika muna sa loob, mahamog na diyan sa labas. Umakyat ka dito at sa loob tayo magkwentuhan.”

“Ay, naku, salamat po pero inaantay na rin po kasi ako sa bahay eh.” Maya politely declined.

Richard panicked. “Oh I’m sorry, I almost forgot. Richard proceeded to the stairs but skipped a few then handed the plastic bag to Manang Fe. Manang, ihatid ko po muna si Maya sa kanila, heto po yung fruits, kumpleto po iyan.”

Manang Fe nodded in agreement. “Sige, ako na bahala dito, tulog naman na ang lahat. Maya, sa susunod hindi pwede na hindi ka papasok ha. Kwentuhan tayo.”

Maya looked at Richard who was already heading down where she was. She looked back at Manang Fe. “Opo, sige po sa susunod na lang po ako papasok, promise.” Then Maya turned her back and headed outside the gate.

“Manang, makiki-kape po muna ako kanila Maya.” Richard informed Manang Fe to give her a hint not to wait up.

“Siya sige, kahit isang litro pang kape ang higupin mo kina Maya, malapit lang naman siya dito eh. Kaya bahala ka na sa pag uwi mo, may susi ka naman eh.” Manang Fe gamely answered, showing her approval.

On the way back towards Maya’s place, Richard gave Maya a reminder. “Maya, you have to mean what you said.”

“Huh? Ang alin?” Maya clarified.

“The one you said to Manang. Sabi mo kanina, sa susunod papasok ka, promise.” Richard repeated what he heard.

“Is that how I said it?” Maya played innocent.

“Yes! Kaya I expect na may susunod nga at papasok ka sa bahay. Don’t give her false hope, a-asa kasi yun sa sinabi mo.” Richard said and stopped the engine of the car. Maya immediately got out, with the plastic of ripe mangoes in her hand.

“Sure, yun lang naman pala eh. Dalawin ko siya minsan. She reminds me of my lola, I want to get to know her. Parang ang gaan ng loob ko sa kanya. Para madagdagan naman ang neighbor friends ko. She looks very motherly. Teka, nagsabi ka ba na magkakape ka pa dito? Baka mag-iintay sa iyo.” Maya turned the key and let Richard in.

“Don’t worry, she knows. Sabi nga niya kahit isang litrong kape pa higupin ko rito, okay lang kasi malapit ka lang pala sa bahay.” Richard watched Maya put the mangoes on the fruit plate display and turned the ceiling fan on.

“Richard, wait lang ha, dito ka muna sa sala, silipin ko lang muna yung anak ko, baka isang litrong kape nga ang mainom natin, mahaba habang kwentuhan yun.”

“Sure! I’ll wait here. Take your time. Sorry, na delay ka tuloy sa anak mo because I dragged you to my house.”

“Grabe ka naman sa choice of words. Kanina vigorously, now dragged. Drag talaga? We rode your car, hindi mo ako kinaladkad.”

“Silly! Sige na go to your child. Baka gising pa.” Richard said while looking at her intently with concern.

Moments later, Maya came back wearing house clothes. “Tulog na tulog na. I hope you don’t mind me changing into house clothes, mas comfortable kasi eh.”

“It’s okay, and I’m sorry, dapat hindi na kita sinama sa house kanina.” Richard said with desolate face.

“Don’t feel guilty. Kanina pa tulog. Kaninang kanina pa raw. Kasama niya si Doris. Dun muna siya natutulog sa room ng bata kasi pinapa-ayos ko yung room ni Doris. Anyway, halika.” Maya walked towards the kitchen to get the coffee beans and took out the grinder. “I like freshly ground coffee beans kasi. Uhm, dun tayo sa veranda ha. Wala naman ako mapagmamalaki na spectacular view tulad sa house mo, pero presko dun. I usually have coffee sa veranda kaya nandun na yung coffee maker ko. Do you want cookies or pastries with the coffee? ”

“Coffee will do. Still full from the party.” Richard immediately inhaled the aroma of the coffee beans. “Hmmm, that smells really nice.”

“Bango no? I combined the Christmas blend from Starbucks and French vanilla flavoured local barako. Do you want your coffee black? Ako kasi with cream and sugar.” Maya kept the conversation as she operated the coffee equipment with ease.

“Just like yours. So, what do you use? Powdered cream or liquid?” Richard asked in detail.

“Ah, ever since I discovered kung ano ginagamit ng isang 5-star hotel, yun na rin ang ginagamit ko. Would you believe, ginagamit nila local brand lang? Its evaporated liquid creamer. Sobrang sarap niya, naubos ko yung nasa small container that they give you sa hotel. And I kept asking for more, kasi pinapapak ko with sugar. Maya giggled while telling the story. “Hayun, eventually, sa kulit ko, nakakwentuhan ko yung mga waiter at sinabi sa akin anung brand yung ginagamit nila.” Richard listened to her, enjoying every movement of her mouth as she told the story animatedly.

“I assume that you are a coffee drinker, you give so much effort making it.” Richard said after getting down from one of the kitchen stools to follow Maya who was heading towards the veranda.

“Ito lang naman ang luho ko, coffee. Natural uppers ko sha, physically and otherwise. Amoy pa lang, gising na gising na dugo ko.” Maya motioned Richard to take a seat while she continued to talk. After pouring water in her Bar Italia espresso/cappuccino maker, Maya switched it on.

“Did you know that coffee can make you cheerful and happier? It can help ward off depression. They said that just by being exposed to the aroma of the coffee can help relieve stress! Galing no?” Maya dominated the conversation. She was steaming the liquid creamer for frothing while waiting for the coffee to brew.

“I find you a cheerful person, siguro sobrang coffee drinker ka. Eh bakit ako, coffee addict pero you find me suplado.” Richard asked.

“Eh ang suplado naman talaga kasi ng dating mo eh. Malay ko ba na you can be friendly naman pala.” Maya said while pouring the froth on top of the brewed coffee.

“Glad to know that you find me friendly now. Did you know that coffee can strengthen your brain function and energy? So it improves energy level, moods, reaction time and brain function in general.” Richard gave his share on coffee information.

“Yes, I have read about it too. Sana your mood will improve at mawala ang pagka pikon mo, at mag function well ang brains mo pag natikman mo yang coffee ko.” Maya sat down beside Richard and brought her cup up to smell the coffee.

Richard looked at his cup with astonishment. “Wow! What a creation, may design pa talaga yung froth ha? Do you have sugar?”

Maya took a slurp and savoured the coffee. “Taste it first. If kulang then you ask for sugar. Nilagyan ko na yan kanina.”

Richard obliged. “Hmmm, this is really good. Pwedeng ilaban sa high end coffee shops. Mukhang mapapadalas akong maki-kape dito ah. Okay lang ba?”

“Sure! Basta alam ni Tito Angelo at nandito ako, kasi hindi alam ni Doris gawin yan.” Maya answered without thinking.

“I don’t think that’s even necessary. I wouldn’t have any problems with Angelo. Matutuwa pa yun”. Richard declared confidently. “Sino nga si Doris?” Richard asked with raised brows.

“Yung super angel ko. Yaya ng anak ko.” Maya clarified.

Richard cleared his throat. “Maya? I hope you don’t mind me asking, uhm…kayo lang tatlo ng yaya at anak mo dito?” Richard boldy asked.

Maya was really getting comfortable with their conversation, observing that having a child was no big deal to Richard and that he seemed to be very much aware that the father of her child is not around. “Yes, may weekly na pumupunta for laundry and plantsa. Malaki naman na yung bata, kaya pag nasa school, nakaka trabaho naman si Doris dito.”

Richard went further. “And you can fully trust her with your child? Do you know her that well? Paano pag nasa work ka?”

Maya saw the concern and worry in Richard’s furrowed face. “Atty. Lim, masyado ka ata maraming child abuse case na hina-handle kaya you have those concerns. Yes, matagal ko na kilala si Doris. Kasama na namin siya kina Mama. I grew up with her, she started sa amin teens pa lang sha. She’s already part of my family kaya I can trust her with my child.”

Richard’s face turned smooth and normal. “You’re lucky may parang Manang Fe ka rin pala.”

Maya laughed. “Si Manang Fe ba matandang dalaga? Kasi si Doris mukhang duon ang punta eh.”

Richard answered immediately. “Yes she is! Pero hindi ko kasalanan. It was her choice not to have a family of her own.”

“Ang defensive mo naman.” Maya said laughing then she stood up. “Wait lang ha, may kukunin lang ako, nagutom ako eh.”

“Sure, I am enjoying this, I am not going anywhere.” Richard said coyly.

Minutes later, Maya came back with a tray. “Tagal ko ba?” She asked right away as she put it down on the table.

“Hmm, I already finished my coffee at malamig na yung kape mo …. and akala ko nakatulog ka na sa taas. Matagal na ba yun?” was Richard’s answer.

“Ay, matagal nga. Pina init ko pa kasi uli, malamig pa kasi yung loob. Then nag toast pa ako ng garlic bread.” Maya put a slice of lasagna on her plate. “Teka tikman ko muna baka malamig pa rin yung gitna.”

“Hmmm, tamang tama lang yung init nya. Baka gutom ka rin. Hindi kasi ako naka kain kanina ng maayos kaka entertain ng ibang guest sa party ni Tito Angelo.” Maya asked then put another mouthful of lasagna.

Richard automatically got a paper napkin on the tray and wiped Maya’s chin that was smudged with red sauce. “There, may red sauce kanina eh.”

Maya shivered with the touch of Richard’s fingers on her skin. Not expecting such gesture, Maya was forced to swallow the food down her throat. “Hmm, thank you. Messy siya kainin eh. Lagyan kita sa plate ha? Luto ko yan.” Maya just put some on the other plate without waiting for Richard’s answer. “Sabayan mo na ako, di ba sabi mo, may gusto ka pa ikwento?”

“Sige nga, nagutom na rin ata ako.” Richard put some in his mouth. After a while, Richard stared at Maya who was busy getting more lasagna from the pyrex dish. “Maya?” he called her attention.

“Hmmm?” Maya asked while chewing her food.

“You should also be in the food business. Did you really make this?” Richard asked before taking another fork full of lasagna.

“I used to have a made to order food business actually. Limited lang naman sa lasagna, chicken pastel, pata tim, mga ganyan, may kare-kare, callos, yung mga pwede i-freeze then reheat. Yung ibang orders for parties. Best sellers ko yung paella, roast beef, kare-kare and a few Korean and Chinese dishes. May desserts rin like mga cheesecake, super soft ensaymada, cream puff tower, mga ganun and give aways like mga cookies. Nung hindi na kinaya ng time management ko during law school, I stopped.”

Richard lifted the chin of Maya and wiped the sides of her mouth this time. Then, he looked at her in the eyes. “You know, you continuously amaze me.”

Maya shivered again. “Continuously amaze you?” she asked as if asking for a more elaborate statement.

Richard stared at her for the nth time. “Sabi ko nga, I have seen you around and mahabang kwentuhan yun.”

Maya raised her eyebrows. “Oh, I thought you wanted to tell me something pa, yan ba yun? Simulan mo na, dami pang lasagna oh, at wala pang isang litro na kape ang na consume natin. Marami pang time. At! 1 minute drive lang ang bahay mo from here.”

“Ah yun ba, iba naman yun. They’re more of information, just wanna let you know, ganun.”

Maya was intrigued. “Ano ‘to, para lang tayong nasa korte, manifestation, for your information and guidance, ganun?”

Richard pursed his lips, revealing his dimple. “Yes, parang ganun na nga. Manifestation your honor, for your information and guidance. Perfect way to put it. Since this night has been full of confessions for me, lubosin ko na para wala ng matira pa.”

“Go ahead Atty. Lim, I’ll be listening. You have the floor.”

“Why do I suddenly feel nervous with that statement?” Richard said with creased forehead.

“Atty. Lim, para ka namang hindi pa nakasabak sa korte. Ako lang ito, why would you feel nervous? Eh, pwede mo namang hindi ituloy, if you don’t feel comfortable with it.”

“No, I want to do this. I keep on bumping into you so often in Court, even if you’re not aware of it. And I am definite, we’ll be seeing each other very often. Other than being neighbors, we have Angelo as our common link, lalo pa ngayon na active tayo sa IBP. So I think it’s just right to come clean, I mean, to let you know about some events in the past.” Richard became serious.

“Noted Atty. Lim!” Maya playfully replied.

“Okay! Remember the time when your daughter had a field trip and you waited sa school with her because a little girl did not want you to go?” Richard watched her facial expression.

FLASHBACK

It was late in the afternoon and the school parking area was full of vehicles. Students are seen disembarking from the bus positioned at the drop off fronting the lobby of the school. Passengers of the other tourist buses are also seen eagerly waiting for their turn. Maya chose to park along a small road near the canteen because she planned on checking the school bookstore for some school supplies. She walked fast to make sure she reaches the drop off in time for the turn of bus #3, where her daughter was.

Students from bus #2 were still going down from the bus so Maya walked further on the path way to get a view of bus #3. Her daughter saw her and immediately waved at her with a wide grin. Maya waved back and motioned that she will be at the center of the drop off.

Bus #3 finally moved to the center and one by one, little girls and boys disembarked from the vehicle with the assistance of the teachers and other school personnel.

“Mommy!” the little girl ran to Maya and hugged her.

“Sunshine!” Maya genuflected and hugged her daughter. “Kamusta? Did you have fun?” Maya asked while checking on the child’s back. “Hindi ka ba nabasa ng pawis?”

“It was fun mommy! Nag-play rin po kami kaya pinawisan po ako. Pinalagyan ko po kay teacher ng lampin yung back ko. Mommy she also put some powder!” the little girl informed her mother.

“Ha? Hindi ka pwede sa powder, may allergy ka baka matrigger. San kumuha ng powder?” Maya worriedly asked.

“Don’t worry mommy, I told her so and she said, kaunti lang para lang ma-absorb yung pawis agad. She put some on my back very slowly kaya wala naman po ako na sniff.” the little girl assured Maya.

“Ahh, okay. Halika muna sa bookstore, it might still be open, we need to get you more PE t-shirt and other supplies.” Maya took the bag and held Sunshine’s hand. “Iwan na muna natin yung bag mo dito sa lobby para wala akong bitbit. I still want to read the bulletin boards here for announcements pero unahin muna natin ang bookstore baka magsara.”

Fortunately for Maya, the bookstore was still open. She bought PE t-shirts for Sunshine because she seems to have outgrown the ones at home. She also got supplies like the required paper which can only be bought in the school bookstore.

“Mommy na-wiwiwi po ako.” Sunshine informed her mother who was already paying for her purchases.

“Sige anak, wait lang. Dun na lang tayo sa gym mas malapit dito. Hold on.” Maya quickly put the money handed to her by the cashier inside her bag. She grabbed Sunshine’s hand and proceeded to the gym area. “Uy, parang bukas pa yung canteen oh. Let’s go there after you make wiwi, baka we can have some snack pa and buy food for dinner, para hindi na ako magluluto.”

More than half hour has passed when Maya and Sunshine came back for the bulletin boards. The area was clear of students and fetchers, except for a few little girls sitting on the floor. “Sunshine, upo ka muna sa tabi ng bag mo. I’ll just read some of the announcements sa bulletin board.”

“Hala, maiiwan ka ng mag-isa dito. Kawawa ka naman. Parating na daw ang mommy ko, ikaw wala ka pa ring sundo.” said one of the little girls.

“Hoy Hannah, huwag ka nang manakot diyan! Ang lapit lang kaya ng bahay ni Abby. Baka wala pa lang makuhang tricycle yung yaya nya.” said the other one.

“Eh totoo naman Bea eh. Yaya na nga lang na naman ang susundo, wala pa hanggang ngayon. Baka nakalimutan na siya ni yaya. Hindi na siya masusundo. Bakit ka kasi walang mommy? Kawawa ka naman. Siguro ayaw sa iyo, o baka ampon ka lang.” Hannah forced her opinion.

“Eh ikaw ba may mommy? Siguro bad yung mommy mo, kasi bad yang ugali mo eh.” Sunshine joined the conversation.

Bea looked at the direction of Sunshine and agreed with what she said. “Oo nga, bad ka Hannah. Hindi nice yung mga sinabi mo. Abby, huwag mo na lang siya pansinin.”

Hannah glared at Sunshine and Bea. “Eh bakit ka ba sumisingit sa usapan? Hindi ka naman namin kakilala. At bakit mo naman siya kinakampihan Bea, kaklase mo ba siya?”

Bea smiled at Sunshine. “Eh di kakaibiganin ko. Hi! Ako si Bea, ano pangalan mo? Grade 1 ka rin ba?”

Sunshine smiled back. “I’m Sunshine. Kinder pa lang ako eh. Siya ano pangalan nya?”

Bea stood up and sat beside Sunshine. “Siya si Abby, isa siya sa mga best friends ko. Sayang wala na si Cheska, may brother yun sa Kinder eh. Abby! Siya si Sunshine, new friend natin.”

Abby looked at them and smiled. “Hello Sunshine. Naghihintay ka rin ng sundo mo?”

Sunshine pointed at Maya who was standing before the bulletin board but was listening to their conversation. “Hayun si mommy, may binabasa lang. Sino ba ang susundo sa iyo?”

Abby shrugged her shoulders. “Sabi ni Daddy he will pick me up. Pero wala pa siya. Hindi naman din pa dumadating si Ate Lea.”

Bea saw an approaching car and yelled right away. “Nandiyan na sundo ko!” She stood up abruptly and gathered her things. “Paano Abby, I’ll go home na. Sunshine anong section mo? Kami ni Abby 1-12, pati yang si Hannah.”

“K-11 naman ako. Pwede ko ba kayo tawagin na Ate? Hindi ba mas matanda kayo sa akin, kaya dapat ate tawag ko sa inyo?” Sunshine asked shyly.

Bea cheerfully answered. “Sure! Gusto ko yan. Ako kasi ang bunso sa amin eh, wala tumatawag na ate sa akin.”

Sunshine was happy and clapped her hands. “Yehey! May new friends ako. Abby pwede rin kita tawagin na ate?”

“Ate? Hindi naman kayo magkapatid. Eh wala ngang mommy yan eh, makiki ate ka pa.” Hannah butt in.

“Hoy Hannah ang yabang mo! Ikaw nga walang daddy eh. Kasi lagi nandun sa mga anak nya sa ibang mommy na ayaw patawag ng ate sa iyo!” Bea blurted out.

“That’s not true! Isusumbong kita sa mommy ko!” Hannah said defensively.

“Anong not true! Yan ang sinabi ng yaya mo sa yaya ko!” Bea insisted.

Shocked with what she heard, Maya immediately meddled to take control. “Mga bata, hindi kayo dapat nag uusap ng ganyan. Pag nalaman yan ng school authorities malalagot kayo sa deportment. Baka ipatawag pa ang parents nyo. Sunshine halika na.”

“Mommy, new friends ko po, si Ate Bea at Ate Abby. Grade 1 po sila.” Sunshine informed her mother.

“Hello Bea, Hello Abby! Nandiyan na mga sundo nyo? Uuwi na kami ni Sunshine eh.” Maya knelt to talk to the girls.

“Sorry po, kasi yang si Hannah eh, sama sa kaibigan ko. Babay na po ako Mommy of Sunshine! Hayan na po yung car namin oh.” Bea said.

“Mommy of Sunshine? Tita Maya na lang Bea!” Maya laughed and tapped the little girl’s chin.

“Okay po Tita Maya. Babay na po. Babay Sunshine, babay Abby!” Bea waved them goodbye. “Babay na rin Hannah. Maging nice ka na ha, at Abby, lumaban ka naman kasi.” Bea then rushed to her fetcher.

Immediately thereafter, Hannah excitedly announced the arrival of her mother. “Nandiyan na si mommy ko! Mommy! Mommy!” Hannah waved at the car while jumping.

A blue car stopped at the center of the drop off and a lady called out from the window. “Hoy Hannah! Halika na! Sakay na sa kotse! Bilis! At bakit ang dumi ng uniform mo? ”

Maya and the two girls just watched Hannah approach the car with a sad face and helped herself in putting her things at the back seat. “Bilisan mo na Hannah! May pupuntahan pa ako eh. Alanganin naman kasi ang balik nyo! Dapat hindi na lang kita pinasama sa field trip eh.” Hannah didn’t say a word until she finally went inside the car.

Maya shook her head feeling sorry for Hannah. “Abby, nakita mo yun? Hindi porke may mommy ang isang bata, better na yung life nya. Gusto mo ba ng ganung mommy?” Abby shook her head. “Don’t mind what Hannah says. Now you know how her mommy is, hindi ka dapat mainggit. Kung wala kang mommy, don’t be sad, I’m sure marami ang love ka. Okay?” Abby nodded and looked at her meaningfully. Then Abby started crying.

“Oh, why are you crying?” Maya worriedly asked.

“Natatakot po ako mag intay dito mag-isa eh. Wala na pong ibang bata dito. Abby answered honestly.

“Bakit ka matatakot, nandiyan naman ang guard eh. I’m sure parating na rin ang sundo mo.” Maya tried to pacify Abby.

“Pero hindi po lady guard. I’m scared. Pwede po ba mamaya na po kayo umalis ni Sunshine?” Abby politely requested. “Kung may mommy siguro ako, baka nandito rin yun kagaya nyo.”

Maya felt sorry for Abby. In her mind, maybe one of these days, Sunshine would be feeling the same for not having a father around. “Sige Abby, sasamahan ka na lang namin muna ni Sunshine.”

“Thank you po, you’re so kind. Sarap siguro ang may mommy. Pero ayaw ko po yung mommy like Hannah’s mommy.” Abby said.

“Abby nagugutom ka ba? Do you want to eat?” Maya asked.

“Thank you po Tita Maya, busog pa po ako eh. Dami ko pong baon. Hindi ko pa nga po naubos eh.” Abby answered.

“Sige, dito muna kayong dalawa ha. May kakausapin lang ako sandali.” Maya stood up and proceeded to the information and talked to the male guard. She asked if there’s somebody she can talk to so they can call up the parent or guardian of Abby to let them know that the girl is still in school and should be picked up.

Maya went back to the girls after about 10 minutes. She assured Abby that anytime now, somebody will come to get her. “Abby, nakausap na ng school authorities yung Daddy mo, on the way naman na pala, naipit lang sa traffic. Pero pupunta na raw dito si Ate Sabel mo.”

“Talaga po? Uhm…pwede po ba antayin muna po niyo si Ate Sabel?” Abby said with a hopeful face.

“Of course. Hindi naman kita basta basta iiwan dito, lalo na friends na kayo ni Sunshine.” Maya smiled at her and her daughter. “Happy ka anak, may new friend ka?”

“Opo mommy, dalawa pa sila! Sabi ni Ate Abby, papakilala rin nila ako kay Cheska kasi may brother siya sa Kinder.” Sunshine sounded so excited.

About 15 minutes later, a tricycle stopped and a woman came rushing. “Abby! Naku Abby! Kanina ka pa nag aantay? Naku, hindi naman kasi sinabi ni Sir eh. Si Ate Lea mo, lumabas, kaya ako na ang pinapunta dito. Parating na si Daddy mo.”

Abby was glad to see Ate Sabel. “It’s okay Ate Sabel. Hindi naman po ako iniwan nila Sunshine at Tita Maya. Sinamahan nila ako mag-wait for my sundo. But now that you’re here, makaka uwi na rin sila. Thank you po Tita Maya and Sunshine. Parating naman na po pala si Daddy eh.”

Sabel approached Maya. “Ma’am, salamat po ha. Pasensya na at nahuli na kayo sa pag uwi dahil sa alaga namin. Excommunication kasi eh. Hindi nagka intindihan sa bahay.”

Maya chuckled. “Hello Sabel, miscommunication ba ang ibig mo sabihin?”

Sabel scratched her head. “Yun na nga po, miscommunication po. Parating na rin po si Sir.”

Maya looked at Abby and Sunshine playing hand game. “Abby! Uwi na kami ni Sunshine ha. Okay ka na with your Ate Sabel?”

Sabel noticed a vehicle approaching from the school gate. “Hayan na po si Sir!”

Abby and Maya looked at the direction of the gate. A white Toyota Land Cruiser was approaching. Abby hugged Sunshine “I’m happy naging friend kita.” She rushed to Maya and hugged her. Maya bent to hug her back. “Thank you po Tita Maya! You’re an angel.” Then Abby kissed her on the cheek and rushed to Sabel. “Babay po, see you Sunshine!”

Maya gathered their things. “Bye Abby! Sige Sabel.” Then Maya walked towards her car with Sunshine in tow.

PRESENT

“I was the cause of the delay. Color coding kasi ako and it was close to 3:00 p.m. so pinilit ko makarating sa condo ko sa Eastwood so I can change vehicles. Kaya lang, pag dating sa Ortigas extension, sobrang traffic because of road works. Then there was miscommunication sa house. Dapat nauna ang yaya sa school before dumating ang tourist bus from the field trip, even assuming that I was on time.” Richard explained, conscious of Maya’s facial expression.

“So that little girl… si Abby, she is your daughter? Ikaw yung Daddy niya?” Maya asked in a high tone.
