Please Be My Legal Wife – Part 19

A/N: Hahaha! I really love this…us…our world!

Saya-saya na nandiyan pa rin kayo to read my stories 🙂

Ngingisi ngisi parang baliw.

ME: Hahaha!

ME: Si Krung-Krung at si Prem-Prem!

Officemate 2: Sino yun?

ME: Secret! 😉

Richard rushed to the elevator and checked his watch.   By the time he got out, Maya’s phone was already ringing.

Maya: Sir Chief?

Richard: Maya, I miscalculated the time so I’m about to leave the office just now. I may not make it at 4:00.

Maya: Okay lang po, I just woke up from a short nap.

Richard: Okay, I’ll see you later.

CHAPTER NINE

Hugs and Kisses – Resolved Issues

Maya came out of her room with Abby who kept tagging along wherever she goes. Maya looked so radiant in her light make up that emphasized her doe eyes and lips with hair neatly tied in a ponytail. The loosely wrapped long scarf around her neck is her favorite Louis Vuitton Rose stole given by her father. She let the scarf rest on top of her white silk-cotton sleeveless blouse paired with jeans that showed her curves and long legs. She matched it with weaved walnut brown wedges and belt, and a Louis Vuitton Ellipse MM bag.

Abby happily agreed.

Since I won, my prize is, sasamahan nya ako sa concert. Okay lang ba na hiramin ni Tita Maya si Daddy Chief for the concert? Abby happily agreed again.

Maya: Hahaha! Maya leaned towards Doris to whisper.

Maya: Oo, promise! Ipapa alam ko yan kay Sir Chief.

Richard: Ang alin ang ipapa alam mo Maya?

Richard posed the question while going down the stairs. Maya looked at him and smiled. He looked so young and gorgeous in jeans and long sleeved light blue polo, paired with dark porto brown Bally desert boots.

Doris: Wow!

Richard: Okay! Pati si Manang Fe sasama?

Manang Fe has just entered the living room and heard her name.

Manang Fe: Mag de-date tayo Maya?

           Richard leaned and kissed Abby.

Richard: Sure baby! Basta si Tita Maya ang kasama mo.

           Abby clapped her hands.

Pero for now, iwan muna kita ha.

Richard: Okay, pero Abby not all the time ha? Next time you have to sleep in your room.

Maya went near Richard,  Gwapo!… She walked around him. Matikas at tunay na lalaki! She leaned forward and inhaled his scent. Amoy gwapong Daddy! She made a step backward and looked at Richard from head to foot. At tindig ng tunay na lalaki!

Patay tayo dyan! Mapapansin ka mamaya sa concert!

 Richard: What?

Maya: Ah wala, Sir Chief! Maya grabbed Richard by the hand and pulled him towards the door.

 Manang Fe: Ricardo! Maya!

Richard and Maya stopped and looked back. “Manang Fe/Po?”

Manang Fe: Kuhanan muna kayo ng litrato. Halina muna kayo rito. Doris, kuhanan mo sila ng litrato.

 Doris: Saan po ang camera?

Manang Fe: Ricardo, ang cellphone mo pahiram. Richard willingly and gladly handed over his phone.

Manang Fe: Diyan kayo sa may hagdanan.

Doris: Ready?

Richard and Maya looked at each other and smiled. Without saying anything, the two leaned towards each other and smiled at Doris.

 CLICK! CLICK! CLICK! CLICK!

Ang ganda! Eh, kasama naman po si Abby. Abby! Come, picture kayo. Dito naman sa piano. Doris pulled out the piano chair and positioned Abby at the center. Richard and Maya sat and gamely posed.

CLICK! CLICK! CLICK! CLICK!

Abby, come here. Manang Fe pulled Abby with her. Instantly, Maya and Richard moved closer together.

CLICK! CLICK! CLICK! CLICK!

Doris: Ang saya! Naku sayang hindi nakita ni BFF. Tagal kasi sa palengke eh!

Manang Fe: Patingin Doris, baka putol putol ang kuha mo at panay paa yan ha.

Doris: Manang Fe naman! Ang ganda kaya ng mga kuha ko. Tignan nyo po. O hindi ba? Ang ganda nilang tignan? Naku, ang saya pag yan nadevelop!

Manang Fe: Ang ganda nga nila tignan. Sana nga madevelop.

Maya: Ano po Manang Fe?

Manang Fe: Ha?

Manang Fe: Ganun ba? Sige, basta bigyan nyo ako ng kopya. Sha sige na at baka mahuli pa kayo.

Richard ushered Maya to the car. He walked beside her, making sure that she won’t look back which might ruin his surprise for her.

Richard: Do you have the tickets?

Maya: Of course Sir Chief! At kahit wala, sa face value mo, papapasukin nila tayo.

Richard: Just please make sure and check your bag.

He closed the door and immediately went around to the driver’s side.

 Maya: Here are the tickets!

Richard: Good!

Richard drove down the street. She glanced at Maya who was busy taking picture of the tickets.

Richard: Maya, maaga pa naman, can we pass by this place I need to look at? Just for a few minutes.

Maya: Sure po!   Maaga pa po, mahigit dalawang oras pa from the show.

Richard: Maya, may usapan tayo hindi ba? Address me by my name and drop the po and opo.

Richard: Maya.

Maya: Okay okay!

After driving a few more meters, Richard pulled over and requested Maya to accompany him. Maya heeded the request and looked around.

Maya: Sir Chief ano po ginagawa natin rito?

Richard: This lot is being offered to me for sale. And Maya, Richard please.

Maya: Ang lapit lang sa mansion.

Richard: Yes, and this is much much bigger. Aalis na kasi yung may ari, they’re migrating to Canada. They do not see any possibility of returning to the Philippines kasi nasa Canada na rin yung only child nila na si Nefertiry who is already married to an American-Canadian.

Maya: And are you considering buying it?

Richard: Why not? It’s a good investment. With the location and the size of it, mababa yung presyo nya.

Richard: Yes, it was there. And look, yung lot area starts from that corner up to there.

Richard pointed to the upper side of the hill, then rested his hands on his waist.

Maya: Wow! This is a huge piece of land. Much much bigger nga talaga.

Richard: Yes it is. I see some potential. Come here. Richard took Maya’s hand and helped her walk through rough road. If you put up a house somewhere here, look.

Maya: Wow, what a view! Mas maganda keysa sa mansion.

Richard: Yes! sa veranda you only get to see the lush green mountains but here, you are not only in the middle of a mountain surrounded by trees, you get to see the Metropolis and Laguna Bay.

Maya: You plan to build a house here?

Richard: Why not? It’s a better location.

Maya: It’s a huge land, pwede ata kahit anim na mansion rito eh.

Richard: I have 3 kids. We can all live in a compound.

 Maya: That’s a nice idea!

Richard: So, what do you think?

 Maya: Of what?

Richard: Is it a good idea to buy this?

Maya: Real estate is always a good investment. If you have the money, then go ahead. Maganda yung naisip nyo, mo, to put up a house and later convert the entire area into a compound.

Richard: If you have the chance, would you buy it and live in it?

Maya: It’s a lovely place to live in.

 Richard: Okay! Let’s go!

Richard comfortably walked beside Maya and held her by the elbow, making sure she’s safe. When they were about to reach the car, Richard thought that it was the perfect time for a surprise. So he stopped walking and let go of Maya. She looked at him and stopped too.

Maya: O, bakit?

Richard: Hahaha! You really have silly ideas Maya.

…Eeeww! Sir Chief! Umuutot ka noh?!

Richard: No! I wanted to give you something and it’s in the car. Richard, Maya.

Maya: Ha?

Richard: Eh I was worried that you wouldn’t accept my apology again, so I made sure I had a back up.

 Maya: Hmmm? Talaga?

Richard: Yes, kasi, if hindi ka makikipag bati, hindi matutuloy yung concert and I really want to go and fulfill my promise to you. Come.

They walked towards the car. Richard opened the passenger door and stayed behind it. Maya saw a huge brown classic teddy bear with red ribbon tied around its neck holding a pink heart cloth with the word “HUGS” stitched on it.  Her face turned red as she leaned in to carry out the bear that was sitting at the back of her seat. She was hugging the bear when she faced Richard.

Maya: Sir Chief naman eh!

 Richard: You like it?

Richard: I want to hear it from you Maya.

Maya: I love it! Hmmmm… sarap yakapin! Ang bango ha! Sir Chief? Niyakap mo to noh?   Kumapit yung perfume mo eh!

Richard: It was the only way to carry it. It’s about 4 feet tall and bulky! They could not provide me with a smaller one kasi yan lang daw yung size ng napili kong bear.

Richard: Yes! Para mas personal diba? Para mas sincere yung sorry ko.

Maya: Naman Sir Chief eh! Sobra sobra naman na ‘to. Sa message mo that came with the balloons at fruiquet pa lang, ramdam na ang sincerity mo eh.

Richard: Seeing your facial expression was worth all the effort I gave. Glad that you like it.

Maya: Super like Sir Chief. In fact, I love it!

 Richard: Good! Let’s go?

Maya nodded at Richard with the smile still plastered on her flushed face. She gave the bear a tight hug and kissed it before settling it at the center of the back seat.

Maya: Okay, Sir Chief. Let’s go sago!

Richard: Eh bakit yung bear niyakap mo na, may kiss pa, tapos ako wala?

Richard wanted to test the waters but even before Maya could react, Richard retracted right away, afraid he might have offended her again. With raised hands, as if surrendering, Richard apologized. “Sorry, I was just kidding.” Again, without waiting for Maya’s reaction, he immediately looked away and walked to his side of the car. Almost simultaneously, Richard and Maya closed their doors and buckled up.

To avoid an awkward moment, Richard got his phone, unlocked it and handed it over to Maya. He started the engine and asked Maya to operate the phone for him. “Uhm, can you do the texting for me please.”

Maya: Okay, Sir Chief. Ano po yung message?

Richard: Thanks. It’s Richard Maya.

Maya: Okay. Thanks, tapos? Kanino ise-send?

Richard: I was saying thanks to you, Maya. Please type this message: Good afternoon, this is Richard Lim. I made an ocular of the land you are offering. When can we talk?I have some questions. Thank you. Send it to Marian Navarro Yip.

Maya: Okay. Na send na.

Richard: Thanks.

Maya: Sir Chief, pwede patingin ng photo gallery? Tignan ko lang yung pictures natin kanina?

Richard: Okay. But if you will not stop calling me Sir Ch–

Maya: Sorry, nakasanayan lang.

Richard: Then you better get used to calling me by my name too. May pangako ka sa akin bago pa yung usapan natin for this out of the box adventure.

Maya: Okay okay, hindi na maulit Richard.  Can I look at the pictures kanina? Promise yun lang titignan ko.

 Richard: Sure!

Naka wacky oh!

Richard: Can I see? Richard remembered the photos he took early morning and got worried Maya might see them.

Maya: Mamaya na, you’re driving. Pwede mangelam? Makiki email ha. Send ko to sa email ko, pwede?

Richard: Pwede ako na later? Baka mahilo ka. Besides, we need to charge that phone now.

Maya: Okay.

Richard: This is the shortest route. Ang layo ng iikutin natin if via Marcos Highway then Quezon City. Besides, sabi mo, okay lang ang ma-late.

Maya: Sabi ko nga.

Maya glanced at the back of the car and stared at the bear, noting the details of the big stuffed toy.

Maya: Ikaw talaga pumili ng bear?

Richard: Yes, also the canister.

Maya: Canister?

Richard: Oh, you didn’t notice! Kaya pala. Well, the bear comes with a glass canister. They should’ve been together to give the message. It should be somewhere there at the back.

Maya looked back again and searched with her eyes.  There resting on the car floor, is a classic glass mason jar with a vaccum seal type cover, filled with individually wrapped chocolates, about a hundred or so. Maya flexed her body and reached for it right away.

Maya: Wow! My favorite! Hershey’s kisses!

Maya looked at the teddy bear again and read the word “HUGS” on the heart. She looked back at the canister and noticed the word kisses repeatedly printed on thin strips of paper protruding from the silver foil wrapped chocolates. In a faint voice, she said the message: hugs and kisses.

Maya:  Richard naman eh! Ikaw talaga umisip nito?

Richard: Yes! I know you’re thinking that I am not capable. But I did. It was a desparate move to be forgiven. I just could’t bear your silent treatment Maya.

You didn’t have to do all these if at the first instance, your apology came from the heart and not from the mouth.

Richard: I realized that later. Kaya nga, bumabawi eh.  Oh but Liza helped me with the balloons and fruitquet.

Maya: Dinamay mo pa si Liza.

Richard: Oh she enjoyed it. Sinigurado ko lang na makakabawi ako.

Maya: Bwing-bawi, sobra pa. You know, siguro malaki mababawas sa annulment cases if ganyan mag sorry ang mga husbands.

Kaya, pag nasa settlement stage ang kaso, they find it hard to forgive already. Bato na yung puso eh.

Richard: Maya, there are a lot of difficult women.

Maya: Women are not difficult. We are so easy to please. It gives a person a sense of worth, kasi hindi ka binabalewala lang.

Richard: Maybe men just find it difficult to express themselves. Ako, I really find it hard sometimes how to say things. Even to my kids, kaya nga diba, you know how we were before. So I am really sorry for apologizing that way the other night –

 TSUP!

Maya was too overwhelmed. She wanted to show Richard how much she appreciates his gestures just to say sorry to her. So, without thinking, she unbuckled herself, leaned towards Richard and kissed him on the cheek.

Maya: There. That is the only way I know how to express my appreciation because it’s nothing if it will remain in my heart. I want you to know that I appreciate you and everything that you do, especially all your efforts just to say you are sorry. Hindi lahat kaya gawin yan.

Richard was taken aback but his heart could only smile. For the nth time, Maya just gave him another natural high and all he could do is to smile back at her. “Thank you.” he managed to say in a soft voice.

Moments of silence passed. Nobody spoke. Both just stayed quiet, glancing at each other once in a while. As expected, Maya broke the silence first.

Maya: Okay ka lang?

Richard: Of course! Couldn’t get any better. Nabigla lang ako, nagulat lang.

Maya: Sa kiss?! Sorry naman if offensive. Sige, babawiin ko na lang!

Maya unbuckled herself and leaned towards Richard one more time. She held his face and pressed her lips on his cheek and did a sucking motion.

Maya:  Ayan binawi ko na!

She buckled up again and looked out the window. Richard pursed his lips, trying to control his smile.  He slowed down to the side of the road then pulled the hand break.

Richard: Maya. I didn’t mean it that way. It’s just that, last night you were giving me the cold shoulder, and then you rejected me and pushed me away. Richard heaved a sigh. Maya, can you please look at me. Richard gently touched her chin and moved it to make her face him.

Look, I thought I already lost your friendship because you consistenly rejected me up until last night. Then now, here you are, back to your oldself again. I’m just so happy that I was forgiven. I was not expecting things to get better with a kiss from you and your words of appreciation.

 Maya: Fine.

Richard: Are you really THAT spontaneous?

Babae ako so it was humiliating on my part.

Richard: Maya, didn’t I just say a while ago that sometimes I find it hard to express myself? That I don’t know how to say things? Maya, you just don’t know how that kiss made me feel earlier. In fact I haven’t gotten over it yet when you took it back.

Maya: Okay, sorry, wrong interpretation. You are very much appreciated, lalo na yung pag-sorry.

Richard released the hand break and continued with their journey while no one talked.   A little later, after glancing now and then at Maya, Richard initiated the conversation.

Richard: I didn’t know na pwede pala bawiin ang kiss…..So that’s how it is done.

 Maya: Naman eh. Maya blushed.

Richard: Okay okay, I was just teasing.

But I’m really curious now, what if the kiss was a smack on the lips, pano yun babawiin? Or if its uhm… French kiss? When tounges are involved? Hahaha!

Maya: Sir Chief! Maya blushed profusely and covered her face with both hands.

Richard: Maya I wasn’t referring to us, I mean you doing it to – ….ahaaaa….so, this topic is something you are scared to talk about….oo nga pala, you never had any boy –

Maya grabbed Richard’s right forearm and squeezed it hard, as if wringing out the water from a soaked towel during laundry.

Richard: Okay I’ll stop. Sorry.

Richard still could not get over the kiss so he kept on glancing at Maya. She felt he wanted to say something. So she explored.

Maya: Ano na naman yan?

Richard: Hmmm?

Maya: May gusto ka na namang sabihin?

Richard: Nothing. I uhm… I ah… I just noticed that you smell different from your usual scent. But it’s nice. What are you wearing now?

Maya: Ah yun ba? Amethyste, Bvlgari, bigay ng sister-in-law ko.

Richard: Smells really good. The other one is also nice.

Maya: Ah yung lagi ko gamit? Clinique Happy.

Richard: Yeah, that one. So does it make you happy?

Maya: It helps me be in a good mood. So yeah, happy state, it makes me happy.

Another moment of silence swept through their journey until they reached the business district in Makati.

Richard: Oh no, I made a wrong turn. Traffic na dito.

Maya: Labasan na kasi sa ibang offices.   Pero maaga pa naman eh. Pagchagaan na natin yung traffic. You know if you go straight, Taft Avenue ang dulo nito.

Richard: Okay, I think you are right. So, distract me. I easily lose my patience in traffic.

Maya: Kaya mo yan. Sabi nga ni Theodore Roosevelt, believe you can and you’re half way there!

Richard: Maya. You know that’s not possible with this kind of traffic. So just distract me. Madali uminit ulo ko sa traffic.

Maya: Distract you? O sige, paano, magtatanggal ako ng blouse dito, ganun?

Richard: Maya!

Maya: O, ayan! Na distract na kita, salita pa lang! Gusto mo ako na lang mag-drive?

Richard: You won’t get rid of the traffic. Just talk to me.

Maya: Okay, what about? You choose the topic.

Richard: Well… uhm…did you know that one of the things that men cannot handle well is rejection?

Maya: And that includes you?

Richard: Yes. For one, I am an only child and I grew up getting what I need, what I want. Things happen the way I planned or want them to be.   The death of Alex was the most difficult time for my family. It was hard for everyone but it was harder for me because it was a deviation from what I wanted, a break away from my plans.   That is why while everybody moved on, I still couldn’t let go and I stayed broken.

Maya: And that is why you easily get upset when your expectations are not met?

Richard: Yes. That’s what happened to me when you came home late that night.

Maya: I see.

Richard: Then you rejected me last night.

Maya: Rejected you?! Hindi ah.

Richard: Yes you did!

Maya: That is another accusation that you insist.

 Richard: Another accusation?

Maya: Dami mo kaya binintang sa akin the night you went ballistic!

Richard: Ballistic?! I thought you already understand why I got upset that night?

Maya: Yes, but that is the only word I could think of to best describe your behaviour that night.

Richard: What about you? You were giving me the silent treatment! It was so deafening!

Maya: Teka, when I tried to say so many things in words, you did not let me!  Now you’re complaining when I spoke in silence? Silence is another word for hurt!

Richard: I tried to talk to you, I tried to apologize! You ignored me many times last night! Then you pushed me away! I felt so rejected the whole night!

Maya: Teka muna, STOP! If we will just argue talking about it, let’s not talk na lang.

Richard: No, Maya. This is important to me. You are important to me, to my family. I value your friendship. So, let’s talk about it now!

Maya: Sayang ang bear and kisses and all the efforts if mauuwi lang naman ito sa away. If you want to talk about it, we should both have an open mind and heart. Kal-ma lang.

Richard: Fine. I’m sorry. Okay, I did not give you the chance to explain that night. Please explain now. Why did you not text or call?

That is why I understood why you wouldn’t and couldn’t accept my reason.

Pero you did not let me explain further. Sir James tried to help. Unfortunately, he used a different car. Yung calling card na binigay mo sa kanya, nasa card case, na nasa car naman na ginamit nya when he came to your house.

Sige, I really thought of asking Sir James to ask his dad, kasi apparently, you know each other well. Pero kasi, pauwi naman na kami and malapit na sa Antipolo, mas matagal pa yung kakainin na oras if we stop so he can call his dad etc.  Besides, I thought 8:30 was still early. I mean, hindi pa alarming.

 Richard: Not a single number?

Maya: Not a single number. I just rely on my phone all the time. Mali pala. Dapat may maliit man lang na phone book to record important numbers. For now, I already memorized yung land line sa mansion pati na rin yung number sa LAS, yung si Liza ang sasagot.

Richard: Okay. Then I am sorry for not letting you explain that night. I was so worried and upset, hindi ko na naisip ang possibility na yan.

Maya: Oh yeah. Sabi ko nga you did not even let me finish my sentences, instead at one point, you smacked the table then you cursed me and accused me of being a liar.

 Richard: I did not!

Maya: Oh-yes-you-did. If I remember it right, ganito ang sabi mo, “Oh shit Maya! What a LAME alibi! It is so UNACCEPTABLE especially coming from you! Such a disgraceful act of falsehood!

O hindi ba those were the very words you said to me? Ay hindi pala said. Those were the very words you HURLED at me.

Okay, sige, I will also give you a chance.  Explain your side now. Pero gusto ko with dance movements ha, like Gangnam Style!

 Richard: Maya.

Maya: Fine! Kahit wala ng dance movements. Go!

Richard: The first part was just an expression! It didn’t mean anything.

Maya: Well for me it meant something and it was offensive. When you said it, sinabi mo na rin in my face that I am a worthless person kasi isa akong poo-poo.

 Richard: Hahaha! You’re funny Maya.

Maya: Anu ang nakakatawa? That’s what it means. Shit is vulgar slang which means feces, waste; in vernacular, TAE, etchas, ebak, poo-poo! In Emman’s language, pink jerbaks!

Richard: Hahaha! Halika nga rito. Richard was lauging hard while he unbuckled Maya’s seatbealt. He grabbed her head and squeezed it under his armpit in a head lock. He kissed her head then released her. You’re so cute!

Maya: Naman Sir Chief yung hair ko! Maya complained as she fixes her hair. Hindi cute maging shit ha.

Richard: It was just an expression of frustration and anger Maya.

Maya: Then it’s a stinky and ugly expression to use and say to a girl.

Richard: It was not directed at you. But just the same, I’m sorry.

Maya: Okay, that’s history then. Eh yung second part? Lame alibi and disgraceful act of falsehood. You just made it sound sophisticated. But what you really meant was walang kwentang pagdadahilan kaya hindi katanggaptanggap dahil nagsisinungaling lang ako.   Right?

Richard: I already explained to you that I was upset –

Maya: Upset? That is an understatement. You were furious! You went ballistic!

Richard: Exactly! And when that happens, you are no longer rational, you lose your ability to think properly. That is why as I have said earlier, the possibility of you not remembering any number never crossed my mind. I admit, I was wrong there and I am sorry.

Maya: Okay! That’s done too. Pero wait. About that alibi thing, it was a wrong usage.

Richard: Seriously Maya? You want to discuss now correct usage and grammar?

Maya: Yes, kasi baka you might go ballistic again and use the same word instead of a more appropriate one… like excuse. While the word alibi is an accepted synonym for excuse, explanation, justification or reason, it should not be interchanged with those words all the time.

The word alibi really means a claim that you were somewhere else when an act you are accused of doing happened in another place so it is physically impossible. . It’s a pretext.

Remember the Vizconde massacre? Hubert Webb? Hindi ba ang defense nya he was in the United States when the massacre happened so he could not have been at the scene of the crime in Parañaque? Yun ang alibi. It is an excuse but in a particular context.

Eh yung sa akin, excuse for not texting or calling. And I did not justify it by saying I could not do it because I was in another place.   So you should have said “lame excuse” not “lame alibi.”

Richard: Noted Attorney!   Can we now go back to other matters?

Maya: Meron pa? Go ahead, mahaba pa naman ang lalakbayin natin.

Richard: Why did you ignore me the whole time last night?

Maya: Ignore you? Hindi ah. Kinakausap naman kita diba? I even sat beside you, and served you with dessert.

Richard: That wasn’t talking. You just said your sentences at my hearing distance. You were not even looking at me in the eyes. And! You referred to me as Sir, without the Chief! What was that all about?

And yes you sat beside me kasi wala ka ng choice. In fact, you refused but Manang Fe insisted. And you kept on moving away from me.

One more thing, you served the others dessert as well. But the difference is, you were enthusiastic with their comments about the desserts while you almost ignored mine.

         So? Three matters. Explain.

Maya: Sir Chief? Pwede time out muna? Na wi-wiwi na ako eh.

 Richard:  Seriously?

Maya: Oo!

Tutal usad pagong naman ang traffic, can I walk to that gasoline station?

Richard:   Okay you can walk pero dun na lang sa fastfood restaurant, ayun oh, for sure mas malinis ang CR at may water and soap.

When Maya came out of the comfort room of the fastfood restaurant, Richard’s car was already parked in front with blinking hazard lights.   Richard immediately got a visual of her so when she went out of the door, he rolled down the window and called her. “Maya!”

Maya ran inside the car and buckled up.

Maya: That was a relief! Ikaw, ayaw mo ba mag CR muna? Baka matraffic pa.

Richard:   I’ll be okay. Ikaw, okay ka na? You might be hungry. You want anything?

Maya: I’m fine. Halika na.

Richard moved the car back to the road.

Richard:   Okay. So, bakit mo nga ako hindi pinapansin?

Maya: Eh kasi may tampo na nga ako, dba? Kasi nga there were hurtful words. Aside from that, masama talaga loob ko kasi, I was not given a fair chance. I was not allowed to explain and defend myself and I am an aspiring lawyer at that. Kaya yun yung reason, bakit hindi ko magawa maging normal, to look at you in the eyes when I spoke.

I did not intend to ignore you. But because of my first reason, ang effect, walang gana. Then lalo pa ako nainis kasi, you acted like parang walang nangyaring sigawan the other night. Yung hindi makapag sorry agad, okay acceptable pa kasi nga may tao na may pride and it takes a while before they could say sorry. Pero to appear as if it never happened was also unacceptable to me. Ano yun, amnesia lang? Bale wala lang ang feelings ko, ganun? Tao lang ako, napupuno at nasasaktan din.

Tapos ikaw, normal na normal ka lang, so I also felt offended. Balewala lang ang lahat. Kaya nga when you were complimenting my desserts, hindi ko makuha matuwa kasi nga in my mind, kagabi lang you insulted me. Tapos normal ka lang ngayon? At iniinis mo pa nga ako last night diba? Alam mo na pala that I was moving away, dikit ka pa ng dikit!

Richard:   Ahhh….so your epoxy punch line was meant for me!

Richard:   Maya, do you think I had a decent sleep that night? Hindi ko binalewala ang nangyari. I was very much affected too. I was very upset it had to happen, again. But even then, I thought, it will pass just like my other

 Maya:   episodes.

Richard:   Okay, if you want to put it that way. Akala ko it’s just one of my episodes na papalampasin mo lang din, at lilipas lang din.  But I was wrong. I admit, I was not prepared for your reaction that night.

I was expecting that you will retort at me with confidence and conviction. Akala ko you will take me lightly as you usually do, I thought you will tolerate me. But you didn’t.

Masyado lang siguro ako naging at home with you. Iba naman kasi tayo eh.

 Maya:   Anung iba?

Richard:   Iba. I really can’t explain, basta iba nga tayo. Well, first, were close friends.

 Maya:   Hmmm? Talaga? Close tayo?

Richard:   Hindi ba? That’s emotional intimacy. Among my friends, si Raffi pa lang ang iniyakan ko, and that was when Alex died.   And you, I already saw you wearing just your underwear. Halos nakita ko na ang kaluluwa mo. Kakayanin mo yun to stay calm and cool after that incident if it were another guy? Say, James Ventura?

 Maya:   Siempre hinde!

Richard:     See? Kasi nga iba tayo. Kaya akala ko we’ll just sleep it off and that on the next day, we’ll be okay.

Then kahapon you did not text me about Abby. So I knew things got different after. Pero you texted in the afternoon, kaya akala ko, okay na uli nung dinner time. That is the reason why I looked normal. That’s why I had to leave in the middle of the dessert.

Maya:   Hahaha!

Richard:   So that’s why Nikki offered me tea!

There was another brief moment of silence after the laughter. Then Richard touched Maya by the hand.

Richard: Maya, hindi kita binalewala. I only have a few trusted friends. I told you, you are important to me, I value our friendship. I knew something was wrong that is why I wanted to talk to you last night, remember? But you did not only avoid me, you refused my request to talk. In fact you pushed me away and sabi ko nga, I felt rejected.

Maya:   Sorry, it was not my intention to reject you. I was not ready to talk kasi masama pa rin ang loob ko, and it wasn’t wearing off even after I prayed and even after I played the piano. Tapos lalo lang sumama loob ko kasi you were commanding me to accept your sorry for “whatever”.

Richard:   Look, I didn’t want to sleep last night na ganun tayong dalawa. I was very disturbed by the way you treated me. I was desparate to talk things out with you. After how you acted at dinner, it took a lot of courage for me to reach out to you at the piano. But you pushed me away when I hugged you. It was my way of offering peace, as my first step to saying sorry.

So I got frustrated and desparate, kaya my apology turned out that way.

Maya:   But you were able to apologize properly, sobra pa nga sa effort. So, okay na ha, move on na tayo. Next topic!

Richard:   There is one more thing.

 Maya:   Ha? Meron pa?!

Richard:   Why did you drop the Chief?

Maya:   Huh? Di ba ayaw mo? So, Sir Chief na uli tonight? Hindi na Richard? Ang gulo ha. Para kang weather, pabago bago. And I thought kaming mga babae ang fickle minded –

Richard:   You know what I’m talking about, Maya. You purposely and consciously dropped the Chief and just referred to me as Sir many times last night. Why so?

(please?!)

PREVIOUSLY on Please Be My Legal Wife – Part 17

(100 years ago! hehehe)

Seconds later, Maya started playing the theme from Love Affair. She played it beautifully and so well, anyone would feel the emotion of the song. Richard was no exception. The music moved him. He wanted to go near her and hold her. He stood up and walked towards her but withdrew when Maya started humming the melody as she played the song in the piano. The humming sounded so full of love and passion it put Richard in reverie. He walked further until he was right behind her. No longer able to hold back, he said her name and touched her shoulder. “Maya…”

Just like in the movie, the music ended unceremoniously with the unpleasant sound of the piano keys smacked by the hands of a very surprised Maya.

Maya:   S-sir Chief.

Without looking at Richard, Maya stood up right away, hurriedly closed the piano cover and pushed back the seat while apologizing.

She was about to walk away from the piano, away from Richard, but in a swift move, he engulfed her right away, just like that night when he got emotionally compromised after he heard Nikki sing. The music she played was so moving it made him untypically emotional and demonstrative. However this time, it was different, because Maya did not reciprocate. She was stiff and apathetic, likewise not the usual her.

Richard: Maya…

He said her name again, so soft and almost inaudible, yet with strong sense of longing. But Maya fidgeted from the web of his embrace and successfully got away.

She said with a dreary tone then started walking, determined to get out of the situation she was suddenly in.

Anticipating a congenial and warmer reception from Maya, Richard felt frustrated and desperate with the moment. In his mind, he wanted to hold her in his arms longer. Oh how he missed her, her company! He wanted to let her know how much he appreciates her, her friendship, her presence in his family and what they have become because of her. But Maya was still evasive and has in fact, pushed him away, literally.

 Richard: Fine. I’m sorry!

Richard exclaimed, making Maya stop from walking further.

Richard: Maya, can you look at me please, I am talking to you.

Maya turned around as told. She looked at him in the eyes, straight-faced.

Richard: That is what you want, right? Then I’m sorry, okay?

Maya: That is what I want? Sir, you are saying sorry because you think it is what I want?

          Maya asked in disbelief.

Richard: Yes! So there, I am sorry for whatever it is that is making you upset, making you… like that. You disregarded me many times; you ignore me like I’m not here.

Richard said perfunctory, sounding like it was obligatory on him.

Maya: So you are saying sorry for whatever?….like anything under the sun? So you are sorry that Ninoy Aquino was gunned down in 1983, and that should please me?

Richard: Yes! Anything! J-just stop this and just be… you, the way I got accustomed to. I want you to stop giving me those cold shoulders. I am not used to it, and I don’t like it!

Richard declared with a bit of arrogance and so much authority.

In a rather firm voice, Maya excused herself again, and this time, with a tone of resentment.

Maya: Sir, I’m sorry but I need to call it a night. Mauna na po ako.

Feeling really exasperated, Richard was not able to hold himself any longer.

Richard: Wha?! Maya! Don’t you walk out on me!   We still need to talk! Is that the way you treat your –

Maya: Boss? Mr. Lim, I don’t intend to disrespect you, Sir.   I am very much aware that you are my boss, and I am your employee. But apparently, this conversation has nothing to do with Abby nor does it concern my job as her tutor.

Besides Sir, without intending to sound ungrateful to your employment perquisites, but I am also entitled to rest hours. If there is anything that you want to talk about concerning Abby, we can talk tomorrow instead. I’m really tired, Sir. It was a long day for me. Mauna na po ako.

Maya excused herself for the last time. She grabbed the empty cup on the console table and quickly walked to her room.

Richard: Shit!

He cursed in a much controlled voice while he stomped his right foot like a 7 year old spoiled brat.

Disappointed and upset, Richard remained standing with hands on his waist, thinking of whether to follow Maya to her room or wait until they’re both rested and calm.

He was so frustrated because he really longed for Maya and her company but his efforts to reach out to her was thwarted and he didn’t know how to handle it. It was something new to him. He never had any difficulty with any woman, not even with Alex. He was always in control, he always had his way.

Richard considered that maybe Maya was right, what ever it is that he wants to talk about, they should do it tomorrow. She’s tired and she needed to rest. He’s frantic and needed to calm down. It wouldn’t be productive to impose himself just so he gets his way to finally resolve his issues and satisfy his sense of self. Thus, he chose to walk towards the veranda to calm his nerves down.

Maya on the other hand stayed behind the closed door, clutching the empty cup, breathing deeply to appease herself.

Sorry daw for whatever!

Too absorbed with their issues and emotions, Richard and Maya failed to notice the vigilant eyes of the two teenagers who were strategically positioned at the family room upstairs, clandestinely watching them.

Nikki: Oh my gee Kuya! Did you see Dad? That is so unlikely of him. I told you, there was something amiss a while ago at dinner. So, I am right after all. They have this tampuhan! Nakakakilig na nakakainis!

Being the eldest and the only son, Luke had the tendency to be protective of his father.

Luke: Niks, we don’t know the real story. Kaya huwag mag-assume.

Nikki: Whatever Kuya! I know you know what I am talking about. You can see it in their body language. Don’t deny it. Pero wait, Dad is so nakakainis. You better talk to him on how to apologize to a woman properly!

Luke: Sshhh!

Nikki: Okay Kuya!

Luke found his father at the veranda staring at the night sky while holding on to the railing in deep thought; he did not even notice his only son.

 Richard: Son?

Luke went near his father and rested his left arm on his back.

Luke: Dad, you didn’t sound sincere, that is why.

 Richard: W-what?

Luke: Your apology. It didn’t appear sincere. In fact, you sounded like you were pushed to say sorry and in the end it was already more of a command.

 Richard: Y-you witnessed it?

Luke: Ah, yes Dad. We were lured by the sound of the piano, so we went outside. Hindi naman namin akalain that something like that will happen.

 Richard: Wait, we?

 Luke: Si Nikki po.

 Richard: Oh great.

Luke: Nothing to worry about Dad. Wala naman pong kaso yun eh. In fact, we’re happy that you’ve developed…uhm…ahh…friendship with Tita Maya. She’s different from the other tutors of Abby. She’s like family.

Richard: Yes, that was unexpected. It never occurred to me that Maya and I can, or will be friends. She’s quite stubborn and unyielding so we always argue. No one has argued with me before.

Luke: Eh kasi po Dad, takot sa inyo at laging nag re-resign or nasesesante.

Richard: Eh kasi naman they were not good for Abby in the first place.

Richard: Maya is different. With her, Abby’s different. Everything became better when she came. Abby, you, me!… with you guys, our family. Even with work. In fact, nandito tayo ngayong dalawa, talking like this because of her.

It’s… j-just so comforting that uhm…there’s always someone there other than your Tita Raffi. She’s someone I can talk to, sensibly. Next thing I know, I was already looking forward to coffee nights with her while we talk about you my kids, and anything.

Luke: Anything under the sun, like Ninoy Aquino being gunned down in 1983?

Richard pursed his lips and looked at Luke.

Richard: Was I really that terrible a while ago?

Luke: Yes Dad. Nasayang yung moment.

Luke shook his head smiling.

Luke: Si Nikki nga kinikilig pero nainis. She was the one who said kausapin ko kayo on how to apologize to a woman properly.

Richard: And how do you apologize to a woman properly?

Luke: Dad, anu man po yung pinagtalunan nyo ni Tita Maya, or dahilan kung bakit siya nagtampo, if you say you are sorry, be really sorry. Say sorry because it is what is necessary, not because it is what she wants that is why you are giving it.

Say it from the heart, mean what you say. Girls can feel if you are really sorry. So more than the efforts like flowers or any keepsakes, it is the sincere apology that will capture their hearts.

Richard: And how am I supposed to do that?

Luke: Acknowledge first? Humble down and admit that you have wronged her, so know muna kung anu yung nagawa nyo na nakasakit, kaya kayo nag so-sorry?

I think from there everything will come out natural. You didn’t even know what you are sorry for.

Richard: And how do you know all these?…any girlfriend that I do not know about?

Richard: Okay son, I’ll take it from here. Thank you.

Luke: Okay po. Akyat na po ako.

After a manly hug, Luke gave his father some kind of assurance.

Luke: Dad, ayaw ko po kayong pangunahan pero, for whatever its worth, anu man po yan, if that friendship leads to something else, wala po kayong magiging problema sa aming magkakapatid.

Sa pakikipagbati, full support po ako sa inyo, and I will not say a word about what we’ve just discussed.

“Tita Maya!” The little girl woke up crying. She saw Maya leaving their house and Maya did not look back when Nikki called her name, so she rushed to check on Maya’s room and saw that nothing was left, a sign that she was not coming back anymore.

Abby had a bad dream.   Clutching on to a stuffed toy, she got off the bed and rushed outside. Carefully but quickly, she went down the stairs and headed to Maya’s door. She knocked but there was no response. She knocked and knocked and knocked again but there was still no response. Suddenly, she became aware of the darkness of the night. Panic set in. Maya must have really left and she was alone in the dark. She was now crying but kept on knocking and knocking. And then she found herself saying “M-mama Maya…”

Maya was sound asleep. Somehow, something woke her up. She sat up right away and rubbed her eyes.

Maya: Sabi ko nga, panaginip lang eh.

She sank back on her soft pillow and closed her eyes. But then she heard some soft knocks on the door. She lifted her comforter and went towards the door where she heard some sobs. She immediately opened it and saw a weeping Abby.

Maya: Abby! Kanina ka pa diyan?

She knelt down and hugged her right away. In response, Abby nodded but cried some more so Maya took her inside and made her sit on the bed.

Maya: Anung nangyari baby? Bad dream?

Abby just nodded again then hugged Maya so tight.

Abby nodded again, wiping her tears.

Pwede ba umakyat sandali si Tita Maya sa room mo so I can get you some clothes? I-off ko rin yung ilaw and aircon? Sandali lang ako ha. Dito ka lang, wait for me. Can you do that?

Maya instructed Abby while tucking her in. Abby nodded with a smile.

Richard purposely went down early for breakfast, hoping to catch Maya. He really misses her. His yearning for her has become stronger. He wanted to push through with their “date” that night  but he knew it wouldn’t be possible if her fret is not rid of first.

Manang Fe: Maaga ka ata.

Richard pulled out his chair and sat at once.

Richard: I need to do some things in the office early.

He readily answered, omitting the information that his afternoon was cleared by Liza a few days ago to give way to that Thursday night’s event.

He asked casually, as if he was going on a routine roll call.

Manang Fe: Hindi pa. Sobrang napagod siguro ang batang ‘yun, kasi maghapon kumilos dito kahapon eh. Tapos hindi naman ata natulog agad kagabi. Hayun, may kasama sa kwarto, may katabi sa kama.

 Richard: What?!

Manang Fe approached her former ward and pulled his hand to stand up.

Richard: Manang…

He puckered his lips as he stood up. He felt naked and awkward in front of the old lady who knew everything about him.   “Nothing escapes her …” he thought.

He was led inside the bedroom of Maya and there, he saw her youngest daughter peacefully sleeping with her head resting on Maya’s chest. They’re hugging each other, emblematic of mother and child. The sight warmed his heart so he pulled out his phone to capture the moment.

When he felt that Manang Fe has left the room, he walked towards the bed and took a better shot. Then, without hesitations, he leaned over and kissed Maya on the forehead. He rubbed the back of his hand on her exposed cheek and whispered. I miss you, I’m really sorry. Then, taking advantage of the moment, to satisfy his longing, he kissed her again, this time on the cheek. Thereafter, he looked at his daughter. Seeing her in a contented and happy state made him smile. “Who would have thought that you could be better” he told himself mentally. He kissed her and said I love you Abby.

He left the room in a resolved state. He will make amends with Maya today and bring her to the concert in the evening, no matter what. So, before eating his breakfast, Richard texted Liza, informing her that she might be asked to do some errands for him at the mall.

Richard drove to his office while thinking of his plan of action. “Concentrate on saying sorry, Richard. There’s a need for something else. The sunflower arrangement was really for the concert date preliminaries. What to do now?!” He reminded himself in thoughts.

When he reached the LAS Building, he immediately proceeded to his office at the 8th floor, instead of going straight to the conference hall. When Richard walked in, Liza was still at her work station, wearing smart casual clothes with pumps instead of her usual office attire and stilettos, busy gathering some documents for the morning meeting.

Liza: Good morning Chief!

Richard: Hi Liza. Good that you’re still here. Meeting ready?

Liza: Yes, everything has been set up. Snacks ready to be served too. So, what’s the errand for me? Do I go now or you need me to be upstairs for the meeting?

Richard: Ah…what time does the mall open?

Liza: Mall usually opens at 10:00. Why?

Richard: Even the nearest mall from here?

 Liza: I think so.

Richard: Do they have stores selling stuffed toys?

Liza: The nearest mall is a big one, so I’m sure they have those items there.

Richard: Yeah, but I want the ones that are timeless. Do you think they also have it?

 Liza: Excuse me?

Richard: I need to buy a teddy bear, but I like the classic ones, if you know what I mean.

Liza: Oh you mean the country type, the ones which give that rustic feel?

 Richard: Exactly!

Liza: But Sir, I think Abby will like the novelty ones than the –

 Richard: It’s not for Abby.

Liza: Oh! Okaaaaaay. May I know the purpose then, if you can’t reveal the identity of the recipient bec –

 Richard: As an apologetic gesture.

Liza just gave a quizzical look, hoping Richard would give more details.

Richard: Napagalitan ko kasi si Maya and I went overboard, nasigawan ko ng sobra.

Liza: Ahhh…okay. Then I must say that the classic bear will work well with flowers, would you like me to buy some too? What flower do you have in mind?

Richard: But you already ordered sunflowers, kaya lang that’s for–

Liza: Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! OMG! So Maya is your significant Thursday?!

Liza’s face turned red as she tried to contain her excitement. She tugged on Richard, asking him to confirm.

Richard: Fine. You got me there. But Liza, the event later is not what you have in mind. The sunflowers are really meant to thank her for the good things she has done for the kids and my family, and I thought later today will be a great time to give her that –

Liza: Whatever Chief! It doesn’t really matter to me ‘cause this is just…..GREAT Chief! I am sooooo excited! So, there’s a bear and flowers. Hmmm…chocolates?

Richard: I already have that in mind. But I want something delivered to her before the flowers. The bear and the chocolates will be with me, for back up. Kasi she refused to accept my sorry last night.

Liza: Really, si Maya tumanggi sa sorry? Hala! Looks like matinding sigaw ang naganap. Ah! Balloons?! Balloons work on kids! Colorful ones!

Richard: But she might take it as an insult.

Liza: Then a balloon arrangement! That’s sophisticated…ah! with fruiquet!

 Richard: Excuse me?

Liza: Fruiquet. Chief, it’s a fruit arrangement like a bouquet, not the usual fruit basket.

Richard: Okay, I think that’ll do. Can you take care of them?

Liza: Sure! Sure! I’d love to do it! I so love this with you…and her… oh wow!

 Richard: Liza…

Liza: Pagbigyan mo na ako Chief! I’m just happy!

Richard: Fine. But you said sarado pa ang mall. Liza, she has to get the balloons and that fruit bouquet before the flower delivery.

 Liza: O-kaaaay, but why?

Richard: I need to be forgiven before the flower delivery. Otherwise, baka hindi na matuloy yung mamaya. I want to keep my part of the bargain. I lost in a bet and I promised to accompany her to the concert of Vice Ganda which she really really likes.

Liza: Hahaha! You?! In VG concert? Aaaahhhhhaaaaaa…si Maya lang talaga ha, si Maya lang!…Chief, I’m so glad it’s her.

Well, you will have to excuse me from work now. I can get the balloon arrangement and fruiquet somewhere that opens at 8:30 a.m. but I can order now on line.

Richard: That’s easy. Is Mang Lem here already? Pa drive ka na sa kanya. Then pa-deliver mo na sa bahay agad after ka pahatid sa mall. But don’t buy the bear yet, okay?

 Liza: Huh?

Richard: I just need you to go to the mall and look for the store where I can buy what I need. I want to go there myself and choose.

Liza: Ah….so it’s personal? That’s so sweet! Eeeeeeeeee! Hahaha!

 Richard: Liza….

Liza: Okay! I can’t help it! Sobrang kilig lang kasi. Chief, I can just check through the internet. I don’t have to go to the mall if I will not be purchasing anything for you. If you want it really personal, you can also choose the fruiquet and balloon arrangement on line too.

Richard: That’s even better. Let’s do those now before the meeting, then you can go. Let me know when you’re back.

Liza: But what about your note for Maya?

Richard: Yeah, you’re right. It might not look sincere too. So, akyat muna si Mang Lem. Tsk! You women are so complicated!

Liza: Ha-ha!

Maya asked Abby to answer some work sheets in math. While browsing the internet for their next lesson, she was thinking of something else – the supposed VG Concert. Her mind was already set on not going because she could not possibly deal with Richard at the moment. Besides, she was not sure if he would still be willing to accompany her. So, she started toying with the idea of going with someone else but could not really think of anyone. That was the reason why she ended up with Richard in the first place. “Punta na lang kaya ako mag-isa? Si Emman kasi eh!” She thought.

Maya was seriously considering going alone when Manang Fe entered the study room.

Manang Fe: Maya…

Maya: Maya!

Maya: Po?

Mang Lem lifted the balloon arrangement and fruiquet on the table. Maya looked at them flabbergasted. Admittedly, she was moved by the gesture.

With a meaningful smile, she said   Sabi ko sa iyo, mabait si Ricardo. Marunong naman din yung kumilala ng pagkakamali.

Maya: O-opo Manang Fe, sige po. Maya replied feeling a bit awkward that Manang Fe seemed to know something.

When the old lady left the room, Maya looked at the balloon and fruit arrangements once again, this time, she relished the moment. She noticed a small envelope with her name on it, tucked in the balloon arrangement. “Wow, um-effort talaga at may card pa ha. Anu naman kaya ang nakasulat dito.” she thought silently as she opened the envelope.

“Dear Maya,

Sorry. I know that I have offended you.   Please forgive me. I was wrong and I am very sorry. I apologize for shouting at you, for scolding, for hurling invectives, and most importantly, for not giving you the chance to defend yourself despite the many times you have tolerated my shortcomings. While I abhor hurting you, I think I just did, simply because I was unfair and unreasonable.  Please accept my apology.

Peace?

RL (IH)”

Maya was heartened with the message that was hand written on the card. Unconsciously, she clutched it to her chest and released a loud sigh. Abby, who was watching, poked her and using sign language, asked Maya if she was okay.

Maya: Ay Abby, okay na okay ako. May colorful balloons na, may healthy morning snack pa tayo oh! Just in time, tapos ka na sa work sheet.   Merienda muna tayo! Ay, teka, wait lang. Picture picture muna tayo Abby!

Maya got her mobile phone and took some pictures.

Maya: Ganda ng fruiquet natin noh?! Baby, kasi yung room mo, happy room naman kasi maraming toys and full of colors, kaya ilalagay ko yung balloons sa room ko ha, para maging happy rin yung room ko, okay? Wait lang ha.

Abby nodded in response.  Maya went to her room and placed the balloon arrangement on the study table and rushed back outside.  She lifted the fruitquet and carried it to the kitchen with Abby.

Maya and Abby went back to the study room after they had their morning snack. They left the fruiquet to the care of Manang Fe, who was still eating the artistically cut fruits with delight. After settling Abby back to her table to answer more worksheets, Maya immediately pressed the send button for the message she composed for Richard earlier to acknowledge receipt of the delectable fruiquet and adorable balloon arrangement. In a split second, she received an incoming call. It was Richard. With racing heartbeats, Maya tried to be calm as she answered.

Maya asked innocently, in the mood to play around.

Richard: B-but I thought….sabi kasi ni…I was informed that according to Mang Lem, natanggap mo na raw yung balloons and fruiquet earlier.

Maya: Ah,yun po ba? Sa inyo pala galing? Masarap po yung fruiquet ha. Matamis and fresh. Nagustuhan po ni Abby.

Richard: You mean, you’re not sure from whom it came from and yet you ate them?!

Maya: It looked so delicious, so it was hard not to taste them. So, kayo nga po pala yung RL.

Richard: Maya, if you didn’t know it was me, why did you eat them? Paano na lang kung may lason?!   Wala ka ba man lang idea what the initials stand for?

Maya: RL…Ahhh…. Roaring Lion?

Richard: Maya.

Maya: Ayan po oh, you sound like one again right now. Teka po, bakit may IH?….ahhh Roaring Lion – Indisputably Horrifying, Horrendous and Horrible! Hahaha!

Richard: This is so frustrating. All I wanted is to say how really sorry I am and be forgiven, but you are not taking it seriously and you’re even making fun of me.

Richard: Wha-? Text?

Maya: Opo Sir Chief, text message, I sent it just before you called po.

Richard fell silent for a moment. Hearing Maya say “Sir Chief” again melted his heart. He became hopeful.

Richard: So, uhm…apology accepted?

Maya: Apology accepted.

Richard: Forgiven?

Maya: Forgiven.

Richard: Thank you! So, wala ka ng tampo?

Maya: Paulit ulit lang, Sir Chief?  Peace na nga po Sir Chief!

Richard: Good! So, I’ll see you later then. Bye!

Richard cut the call right away and checked his inbox to find Maya’s message.

Maya’s Text: “Sir Chief, Abby just had her morning snack. Thanks to your balloons and fruiquet. They brightened up the day, warmed our hearts, and filled our growling tummies! Efforts appreciated, apology accepted. Peace! 🙂

Richard got so excited now that Maya has forgiven him and is back to her usual self. He got eager to finish work so he can go home early afternoon for the VG concert.   About thirty minutes after talking to Maya, the sunflowers arrived in his office.

Liza: Excuse me Sir, the sunflowers are here. Kuya, paki patong na lang po dito.

Liza ushered the delivery guy to the table near the window.

Richard: Is Mang Lem back already?

Richard asked the flower shop’s delivery guy.

I will pay additional delivery fee if needed.

Delivery Guy: Wala pong problema, Sir.

Richard immediately informed Liza on the changes via the intercom system. Then the delivery guy was sent off right away after Richard wrote on the card.

Abby already dozed off for her afternoon nap. It was an unholy hour and Maya decided to do some readings instead of forcing herself to catch up with sleep. She thought that maybe reading would relax her eyes and mind, as well as help her forget about the concert. She was comfortably seated at the lounge chair at the study, holding up her book when Doris came knocking at the door side to get her attention.

Maya sat up and took the bouquet of sunflowers from Doris.

When Maya opened the card, she was surprised to see the familiar handwriting.

“Dear Maya,

I came across a sunflower a few days ago and it instantly reminded me of you. So, I had these ordered right away for today, as prelude to my “out-of-the-box-adventure” with you later, and of course to say thank you for bringing back sunshine in our lives.

Be ready for our “date” at 4:00 p.m.

Excited,

RL – your Incredible Hulk 🙂 ”

Once secured inside the room, Maya shut her eyes indeed and started breathing deeply. “Maya kalma! Bakit ka kinikilig?! Bulaklak lang yan! Bulalak nga lang pero galing naman kay krungkrung! Pero sabi nga nya, as part of the adventure later, kaya huwag ka ng pa-apekto!” She reminded herself then shook her head a few times. She stared at the bouquet of flowers cuddled in her arms. “Sabi ko nga!” she said and took the message card from the sunflower bouquet and read it a few more times. Then she kept it together with the other message card from the balloon arrangement. “Haaay, ang sweet…” She sighed before finally closing the small leather covered box.

Maya relaxed on the bed with a smile but her eyes were feeling really heavy. She managed to send something to Richard and then instantly conked out.

Richard got upset when he realized a little late that his phone’s battery was already drained. He was anxious to receive a message from Maya, wanting to know if she received the sunflowers and how she’s taking his gesture.   So the moment the battery charged to a percentage good enough to make the phone function, he checked his inbox at once. True enough, there were several messages that came in. He saw the message from Maya, sent more than 30 minutes ago.

Maya’s text: “Sir Chief! You’re so kind! VG concert will happen! Thank you!!!!!!! Happiness to the maximum level! See you later Sir Chief! 🙂

Richard read the message over and over again with a smile. He was glad that Maya seemed to be really back to her normal self, of being spontaneous especially of expressing of what is truly in her heart. Then, as he checked on other messages, he was surprised to see another one from Maya.

Maya’s text: “You have received an electronic mail. You can check your mailbox now.”

Richard’s brows creased, wondering if Maya really sent him an email. He browsed his phone and pressed the mail icon. He was pleased and excited to see that indeed, Maya sent him an email. He clicked on the message and read it with a big smile.

“Dear RL,

Thank you!!! The flowers were unexpected, but they’re awesome!!! However, letting me know that we’re pushing through with the VG concert is even more superb! I thought ‘later’ will no longer happen, but because you are so giving (with potentials of being fun too!) it will, after all. I am so happy that I will finally watch VG live! In a concert! What makes it more interesting is that you will be with me.   🙂  It will definitely be an adventure – ha ha ha!

More excited,

MdR – IHA 😉 ”

Richard was overwhelmed with Maya’s message. He was pleased to know that a woman can appreciate him for little things like that and not for his status, assets, looks, or expensive gifts. He was contemplating on replying to the email when Liza made her presence felt. “Ahem!”

Richard: Yes, Liza.

Liza: Chief, with that smile, I can say that the balloon and fruitquet worked well on your significant Thursday. But why are you still here? It’s already past 3:00 o’clock!

Richard: What?!

Richard got too engrossed reading Maya’s messages over and over while processing his thougths and feelings, he forgot about time. Good thing Liza was there to remind him. He unplugged the charger and started gathering his things.

Liza: Enjoy it Chief! Don’t worry! You’ll still make it on time.

Richard: Thanks Liza. I owe you big time! Bahala ka na rito.

Richard: Okay, thanks! I’ll see you in a while!

PS: sorry if masakit sa mata ang spacing and all.  WordPress keeps on editing on its own, nangengelam lang sa format ko, ganun.  Hope you liked this update after 100 years. 😉

BCWMH Extended – Dec. 12, 2014 epi(sana)

Pasensha na po sa long absence from this BCWMH Extended versionIt has been a week long of due dates, year-end meetings and lots and lots of parties. After my last party Friday night, I was told we were scheduled to leave for a northern province a few hours later.  So, here I am, where internet connection is poor and communication line seems to be so scarce.  So, if I get to post this one and several others, then I got lucky.  MERRY CHRISTMAS my dear cyber family and friends! mwah!

Not wanting to prolong their agonies, Maya and Richard walked faster towards the center and hugged each other right away. Without uttering any word, both just felt comforted with their presence.   Moments later, Richard pulled away and handed the flowers to Maya. She smiled at him and cradled the flowers on her right arm. She held Richard’s face using her left hand and pulled him towards her to kiss him on the lips. Then they just looked at each other momentarily, smiling like fools and walked towards the car holding hands.

Upon reaching the car, Richard took the bouquet from Maya and placed it on the back seat.   He went back to where Maya was standing and finally said something. “Sweetheart, do you want to eat breakfast first? It’s almost 5:00 o’clock.”

“Sige sweetheart, hindi nga ako masyado nakakain eh. Pero makakapag hintay pa naman hanggang bahay.”

Richard was standing on the road with his left foot resting on the pavement where Maya was positioned. He took Maya’s hand and placed it on his cheek. “No, sweetheart. I am not bringing you home yet. I want to have quality time with you first. Marami akong kaagaw sa bahay eh, lalo na ngayon that Mama and Papa are home too. We can eat somewhere. ”

Maya instinctively answered, exposing what she really wanted. “Sige! Kahit saan basta magkasama tayong dalawa, okay ako.”

Richard was satisfied with Maya’s answer and had that lopsided smile. “Then I guess you have to change first.” Richard said and turned over to her the handle of her travel bag. Maya just stared back at him, obviously thinking of something. “Maya? May problema?”

Maya didn’t want to upset her husband again and was thinking of how to say things. She silently shook her head but decided to be honest. “Eh kasi sweetheart, si Mama – ”

“Mama is okay now. I arranged everything. She already had her massage at home last night, pati hair and nails treatment, okay na. If that is what you are worried about.”

“Huh?! Talaga?! Inayos mo lahat, sweetheart?” Maya excitedly asked.

“Yes! Only so I could have my time with my wife whom I’ve missed so much.” Richard said lovingly.

“Aaaaawww! Sweetheart! Ang sweet mo talaga! Sige, bibihis na muna ako ha.” Maya immediately turned around and headed back inside the building, dragging her travel bag.

The couple were on their way to Somethin’ Fishy at Citywalk 1, Eastwood City, in Libis, Quezon City to eat breakfast, just like how he planned it last night. The restaurant is open 24 hours and offers a wide range of choices at the breakfast buffet.

“Sweetheart, pano kaya yung mga bata, ine-expect kasi nila na pag gising nila nasa bahay na ako.” Maya shared her concern casually, not wanting to ignite another discussion with Richard.

“Oh don’t worry about them, ang alam nila delayed ang flight mo from Japan.” Richard informed her with a grin.

“Sweetheart ha, that is lying, bad yun!”   Maya lightly admonished her husband while shaking her pointer finger that was directed at him. “So ano naman ang kwento mo kung bakit ang aga mo umalis sa bahay kanina?” Maya curiously asked.

“I need to be in Clark early to check on the hangar.” Richard readily answered Maya with a wink.

           “Hala, sweetheart –”

“Hayaan mo na, just let me be, Maya. Those are just harmless lies that can save our marriage.” Maya looked at him with raised eyebrows.

“Yesterday, I was so lonely after I belatedly read your message. Mas lalo ako nalungkot when we came home from the hospital. We cannot get used to being away from each other with something unresolved between us. I don’t want to be like other couples. They’ve grown apart because they allowed it.”

“Sweetheart, ako hindi kita natiis ha. Kahit ikaw ang nauna nagsungit, nag text pa rin ako bago umalis.”

“Kaya nga I told myself last night, I will not let this chance pass. May tanung pa?”

Maya shook her head smiling. Then, she released her seat belt, moved towards Richard and kissed him on the cheek. “I love you. Saan tayo kakain?”

“I love you too.” Richard said as he held Maya’s face close to his then released her. He pointed to the restaurant. “We’re eating there. Park lang tayo muna.”

“Wow sweetheart! May puto bumbong sila oh.” Maya got excited seeing the variety of food displayed at the buffet.

“May champorado and arroz caldo rin.” Richard informed her.

After some time, both went to their assigned table with smiles on their faces. “Sweetheart, naalala mo siguro nung dinalhan kita ng arroz caldo nung nagkasakit ka noh, kaya yan ang kinuha mo.”

“Yes. Eh ikaw, naalala mo rin siguro nung pinadalhan kita ng pang champorado kay Mang Lem.”

Maya nodded. “Oo, sweetheart. Yun kaya yung unang beses na may pinadala ka sa bahay. Akala ko nga nagpapaluto ka ng champorado eh.”

Richard looked at her with a frown. “Hindi ka kinilig?”

Maya drank water as she almost choked on her food. “Sweetheart, ano ka ba? Lagi naman akong kinikilig sa iyo eh. Tulad ngayon, kinikilig uli ako, kasi, parang ganito tayo nuon hindi ba? Sabay nag aalmusal kapag nanunundo ka or naghahatid papuntang airport. Di ba minsan pa, sa condo ka kumakain. Kilig na kilig kaya ako nuon, kasi sa isip ko, ganun siguro ang feeling ng mag asawa.”

Richard continued eating. “And I miss those moments. Dami ko na kasi kaagaw sa iyo eh. Dati, si Abby lang. Kaya ko pa sumingit. Now, lahat sila kaagaw ko sa iyo eh, eh wala naman ako laban pag dating sa kanila.”

           “Moments? Singit kay Abby?”

“Moments na nakakasama kita nung hindi pa tayo. Masaya, and yes, nakaka kilig rin. I didn’t realize na I was looking forward na magdrive for Abby, or ipasyal si Abby kasi kasama ka. Remember nung Christmas program ni Abby? I just felt so connected with you, ang saya ko that you were there with me, kahit nasa office ka. And of course, I really looked forward tuwing ihahatid kita or susunduin nung nanliligaw pa ako.”

“Tandang tanda ko pa silang lahat, sweetheart. Pero singit talaga kay Abby?”

“Yes, hindi ba nga, halos anino mo na si Abby. And of course, I wanted to be discreet to protect you, at the same time, I didn’t want to scare you away.  Kaya, sinamantala ko yung chances na yun. Remember nung sinundo ka namin sa school because she wanted to surprise you and we ate out?”

“Sweetheart, pano ko naman makakalimutan yun? Ang gwapo mo kaya in that skyblue long sleeves. Tapos nagkasabay tayo sa paghawak ng door handle. Halos hindi kaya ako makatingin sayo, lalo na yung ganung ngiti mo na nakakatunaw! At, ito sweetheart ha, ayoko hugasan yung kamay ko kasi kumapit yung perfume mo. Ang tagal mo kasi tinanggal yung kamay mo eh.”

“Actually, nagulat rin ako nuon but I wanted to hold on. I really didn’t want to let go of your hand then. Siguro if you did not get my attention, tumagal pa yun. ”

Maya excused herself. “Sweetheart, sandaling sandali lang ha, 5 second break, kunin ko lang yung pinaluto ko na puto bumbong.”

When Maya returned, the waiter has just served their cups of coffee. “Sweetheart! Naalala ko yung unang simbang gabi natin. Naalala mo?”

“Of course. May tampo ka pa nuon sa akin pero we made peace sa church.”

Maya stopped stirring the coffee of Richard after putting sugar and cream. “Sweetheart! Nalala mo talaga? Sobrang kilig ko kaya nung nakipag peace ka. Kaya hayun, lumipad agad ang tamporurut ko sa iyo.”

Richard chuckled remembering how Maya treated her those times. “Iniiwasan mo kaya ako nuon. Hindi mo pa ako kinakausap ng matino, either nakatalikod ka or hindi ka nakatingin, tapos lagi nagmamdali umalis.”

“Eh sweetheart, kasi naman – ”

“Ako nga, dapat nagtamo rin eh. Kasi, pinamigay mo yung puto bumbong that I shared with you.”

“Ay, hindi ko pinamigay, kinuha sa plato ko.”

“At hinayaan mo. Naglakas loob kaya ako.”

“Hindi ko kaya alam anu gagawin. Takot na takot ako sa mga bata. Nagulat ako sa ginawa mo.”

            “Pero kinilig ka?”

             “Oo!”

Maya just held Richard’s arm as they walked towards the parking. She was also quiet when she went inside the car.  She slumped her back on the seat the moment she put on her seat belt. “Sweetheart, I know you are tired, wala ka pa halos tulog. Go ahead and sleep. I’ll just wake you up when we’re there.”

“Sweetheart, hindi ako antok, promise. Mahapdi lang ang mata ko, I just need to close my eyes para mag-moist sha.”

“Okay, then close your eyes for as long as needed. Para comfortable ka, remove your shoes and recline the seat. Sige na, huwag na matigas ang ulo.” Richard said and did everything he said . He reclined the seat and removed her shoes. Maya immediately fell asleep the moment she closed her eyes.

She felt being carried and woke up in Richard’s arms. “Sweetheart, baba mo na ako. Sa bahay na pala tayo?” Maya said with flickering eyes, struggling to get a clear vision.

“No, we’re somewhere else.” Richard slowly put her down on her bare feet.

Maya looked around and at once, was amazed by what she saw. “Wow! Ang ganda naman dito sweetheart. Tignan mo oh, may gondola pa. Para tayong nasa Venice!

Richard just watched her wife with a lopsided smile. “Ay Hotel Venice nga ang nakalagay sa sign. Ang ganda naman ng water works.”

“That is actually a Jacuzzi, sweetheart. You can relax there later if you want.” Richard said as he walked towards her. “Come I’ll bring you to the bedroom so you can rest.” Richard scooped her up again.

“Ay! Sweetheart dahan dahan, yung likod mo naman, ang bigat ko kaya.”

“Sweetheart, I am strong as a stallion.” Richard proudly said as she laid her down on the big bed.   Maya, immediately noticed something.

“Sweetheart! Bakt tayo nandito? Ang daming salamin!”

“Shhh….” was all that Richard could say and let Maya sit up to get a better view of where she is.

           “Ricky! Nasa motel tayo?!”
